6 Tips For The Girl Who Feels Like She Doesn’t Have Her Life Together

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ODU chapter.

It’s easy to let life pass you by without even realizing it. We always have so much going on between school, work, our social lives and attempting to go to the gym that it’s hard to find time to invest in building our futures.

If you feel like all your friends are passing you by moving into their career fields and doing things to benefit their future, while you’re still trying to figure out how you’re going to get through the week, this one’s for you!

1. First things first, RELAX!

Worrying about the future will only make your problems bigger than they are. As college students, we have enough to stress about, so give yourself a break and let things happen as they will.

2. Give yourself some credit.

You’ve already taken the next step towards building your future by enrolling in school. Even if you’re undecided on your major or you’ve changed your mind, you’re still on the right path! Being thrown into adulting after you graduate high school and expected to know what you want to do with your life is some serious pressure. So take your time to figure things out and don’t get down on yourself.

3. Productivity is the key!

Learn to manage your time more wisely and make sure you’re doing something productive every day. Whether it be getting ahead on assignments, job searching, or starting a blog. Staying away from frequent Netflix binges and spending some time investing in yourself will help you find your passion and produce positive outcomes.

4. Get involved on campus

There are probably way more opportunities on campus than you think. Head to an involvement fair, check out Monarch Link, or visit the Leadership and Student Involvement office. Working with your school radio, newspaper or being just involved with a club or organization looks great on resumes.

5. Get an online internship

Not all good internships are far away in huge cities, there are tons of great online internships and even some that are paid. Visit https://www.looksharp.com/s/virtual-internships and https://www.internqueen.com/internships/industry/online to see some of the top online internships. Her Campus also has awesome internships in the job board!

6. Network, network, network!

All your friends that are involved in activities and getting internships? Use them! That’s what friends are for anyways, right? Getting in touch with the right people will take you further than anything in life. Also, go to a career fair. They’re filled with businesses that are looking for employees. Print a few copies of your resume, put on your best clothes and go show them why they should hire you.

While the point of college is to get a good job when you graduate, it’s important not to put unnecessary stress on yourself. Life has a funny way of working things out and no matter what you’re doing, or not doing, right now, you’ll always end up where you’re meant to be.

When you start to feel discouraged remember that Oprah, Tina Fey and Hillary Clinton didn’t become famous until their 30s. Just be patient because as long as you’re working for it, your time will come.

Hi everyone, I'm Petra (PEE-truh) and I'm an ODU alumna who has branched out to sunny Southern California. Following graduation, I didn't have too much of a plan for where I was going in life but I knew to stay in Virginia was not an option. I wanted more than what was offered there so I started applying to almost every job in all my dream cities and life led me to San Diego. I now do sales, marketing and social media management for a great startup company, Voterfied. I love everything about San Diego and the work I'm doing here. So my advice to everyone, get out of your comfort zone! Take that leap of faith and let life guide you to exactly where you're meant to be. HCXO, Petra!
