10 Struggles of Moving to NYU as Described by the Cast of Friends

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

For most fans of Friends, getting into NYU meant attending the college that Doctor Ross Geller taught at, and moving to Greenwich Village meant moving to the neighborhood of the iconic and unfortunately fictional Central Perk. Despite not being able to hang out with Gunther in real life, Monica, Chandler, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, and Joey will be there for you as you encounter similar struggles of city living at NYU.

1. Craving Hayden cookies

They’re not always there, so when you see them you NEED to eat them all.

2. Wanting to go shopping in SoHo rather than do work

Homework will always be there, a great sale won’t!

3. Attempting to maintain a workout routine

Trying to balance homework, clubs, a job, an internship and a social life leaves no time for the gym… much less sleep.

4. Having a boring professor

Creating games in a dull class to avoid blatantly falling asleep is a crucial skill to have in 8 classes.

5. Making poor decisions with your money

The self control needed to budget your money just isn’t always there, and when you do decide to spend it, it’s on something completely unnecessary.

6. Trying to experience all of the culture that Washington Square Park has to offer

If Phoebe Buffay played in WSP she would intimidate all of the other musicians.

7. Trying to keep up with your caffeine addiction

Why isn’t Central Perk a real place? Why are the cutest coffee shops the most expensive?

9. Having a terrible sense of “Gaydar”

Coming to NYU has made you question if the cute guy down the hall is gay or just in a very serious bromance.

10. Struggling to find an outfit that is weather appropriate

If you dress for the heat, then you’re too cold in class. As the seasons start to transition, layering in New York is a necessity.

Erin is a senior and former Campus Correspondent at NYU studying Comparative Literature and Music. On most days, you can find her at local coffee shops or cafés with her nose in a book. When she's not falling in love with fictional characters, she's blogging away on her lifestyle blog. If Erin is "busy", she is either in choir rehearsal or thinking of creative ways to conquer the literary world.
