Why Autumn is the Best Season of the Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

With summer now a fond and distant memory, we find ourselves accepting the lack of sunlight and warmth, as everything turns golden-brown and shuts down for winter. You’ve ditched the sandals and shorts for jeans and jumpers as you scuff through the leaves, trying to protect your face from the nippy wind that makes this season less enjoyable. Therefore, in an attempt to look on the Brightside, here are a few reasons to fall in love with fall…

Going back to uni!

What better reason to look forward to this season other than the fact that you get reunited with all your pals for relentless nights out and reunions. Having realised that three months of your mum’s home cooking didn’t in fact make up for the nagging, it’s good to be back in a place where no one cares if your room (or entire house) is a bit of a bomb site or what time (or with who) you came home last night…

Rediscovering your winter wardrobe

Just when you realise you’ve lived in the same shorts and top all summer and you should probably change it up a bit (i.e. buy more clothes), the temperature drops by ten degrees so you have no choice to unless you want to lose your legs to frost bite… But how wonderful it is to open up your closet and find twenty-odd more available outfits that had been redundant for the past 4 months! They may not be new, but there is always that one well-loved jumper or pair of boots that has lain forgotten in the bottom of your closet until now!

Cosy nights in

With darker and earlier evenings, nothing feels better than getting cosy and watching your favourite film or TV programme for an evening, totally devoted to winding down and relaxing. In fact, the season calls for cosy indoor gatherings such as the cinema and every other event that would have seemed a waste of the “good weather” in the summer months.

Hot drinks

After racing through the rain to get to work or uni, nothing beats warming your fingers on a hot drink and embracing the caffeine induced buzz as you battle through that inevitable bout of freshers’ flu. Hot drinks seem to create a glow from the inside, allowing you to welcome the brisker outside weather and the excitement of the creamy, wintery spiced drinks served in all the coffee shops is reason enough to look forward to this time of year!

So as you wrap yourself in layers upon layers of wool and curse that freezing wind which is certainly giving you a windswept look, to say the least, as well as making your eyes and nose run, try to focus on these five little things that make the season unique, beautiful and bearable!
