Travel-Themed Movies to Inspire your Wanderlust

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

It’s reached that time of year now where Christmas is a distant memory and summer is too far away to provide any motivation. Grab a couple of these films for a wanderlust-themed night in to keep you occupied on these cold wintery nights – maybe add some themed snacks from around the world too!

1. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

This film is one for all the dreamers, depicting a typical man embarking on an extraordinary global adventure to see what he’d before only fantasized about. It also features stunning views of Iceland and Greenland from land and above, as well as some more creative sequences to tempt the imagination.

2. Eat Pray Love

The go-to movie for anyone seeking their wanderlust, with a touch of romance on the side. Based on a true story, Liz eats her way through Italy whilst picking up the native tongue, adopts yoga and discovers the power of prayer in India, before touching down in Indonesia where she finally finds her life balance. You may not be able to stop yourself researching each destination’s latest deals before the film is over!

3. Wild

Based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoirs, Reese Witherspoon stars as the protagonist who, despite limited hiking experience, spontaneously embarks upon the Pacific Crest Trail armed with an oversized backpack and the addition weight of her past. Emotional flashbacks accompany stunning Californian views that contribute to a touching tale of self-discovery.

4. Slumdog Millionaire

This Oscar sensation allows the viewer to delve into the slums of Mumbai and see how one boy rose above them, competing on the Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and using nothing but his personal experiences to answer the questions, prompting accusations of cheating. An energetic, moving movie that provides a more unusual travel insight.

5. Up

For all those looking to let their inner Disney-lover  roam free, this animated Pixar classic sees an old man fulfill a childhood dream when he pulls off the impossible and flies his house to South America. A light-hearted yet touching comedy with a stunning colour palette full of clear-blue skies, luscious green forests and tropical creatures.

6. Pirates of the Caribbean

Starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, he embarks upon a wild quest across the seas to secure a mountain of treasure, accompanied by a young Orlando Bloom looking to rescue his love, played by fresh-faced Keira Knightley.  Combining the supernatural with traditional pirate motifs, and filmed mainly on the island of St Vincent, this dangerous adventure may make you feel a bit more content with the fact the only trouble you have to face is that next essay!
