Super foods seem to be all the rage at the moment. They’re the secret behind celebrities’ good looks, the key to a healthy lifestyle and photographed all over Instagram!

I’m going to tell you how you can incorporate these super nutritional foods into your diet, and show you that it is possible on a student budget.

1) Avocado

We are all aware of the hype surrounding the almighty avocado – the “it” fruit of the moment. Popular amongst hipsters and plastered all over Tumblr, it is safe to say that the avocado is one cool fruit and for good reason! High in healthy fats (yes-they exist!), and vitamins A, B C, E and K,  the avocado can help protect the body from heart disease and cancer, and due to its high potassium content this super fruit can help to soothe those inevitable “Crisis” hangovers.

How to incorporate Avocados into your diet

You can easily impress your friends with this guacamole recipe that only needs 3 cheap ingredients! Simply mash together an avocado, cherry tomatoes and the juice of a lime or lemon. If you really wanted to be fancy, add some coriander into the mix. Serve this up with chicken, fish, fajitas or even with some tortilla chips on movie night, to really show your friends that you have more to showcase from your gap yaah, than that one pair of ethnic “harem” trousers that you prance around in!

2) Dark chocolate

The under-hyped, forgotten health freak brother of our well loved milk chocolate.

This is simple. Just switch the snickers bars for a block of dark chocolate. The good thing about dark chocolate is that because it has such a rich taste, a few blocks is all you need to satisfy those sweet cravings, so a bar of this super food will go a long way! This healthy snack is full of antioxidants which have been proven to improve blood flow and boost overall heart health. It is also said that dark chocolate can improve your mood, which is especially good for that time of the month ladies! When buying dark chocolate, make sure that it is at least 70% cacao or cocoa, to experience the full benefits it has to offer.

Serving suggestions (although there’s nothing wrong with scoffing down a few chunks!):

–          Melt the chocolate, pour over popcorn and leave in the fridge to set. In next to no time you will have made your own healthy gourmet style popcorn.

OR

–          Chop a banana into bite sized chunks and dip into melted dark chocolate. Place these into the freezer to solidify and voila, you’ve made your own frozen choco banana treats, which are a healthy alternative to ice cream making it a snack worth instagramming! If you really want to embrace your inner Nigella, sprinkle some chopped almonds over the melted chocolate for some added crunch!

3) Blueberries

We all know about the benefits of eating fruit… 5 a day blah blah… but the blueberry supposedly has more to offer your body according to Hollywood nutritionists! They say blueberries aid weight loss and give you a glowy complexion. Blueberries are full of antioxidants and just a handful is equivalent to drinking a cup of green tea… I know which one I’d prefer! This super food is so versatile – whether you sprinkle some over your porridge or make them into a healthy dessert by adding them to some plain or flavoured yoghurt with some honey.

Happy eating!
