Summer Isn’t Over: Earning and Travelling in 2016

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Summer may be barely over, but rather than spending your time reminiscing over glorious beach days gone by as you put off writing that first essay, why not start researching ideas for how to make next summer even better- why not spend it working abroad!

Disney World

Have you dreamt of waking up in your own enchanted castle? Do you have an unusually high tolerance for all things sugary sweet? If yes, then a summer working at one of America’s Disney parks may be for you!

Applications are now open for general cast members (the workers you see  doing anything from serving freshly made popcorn to showering guests with pixie dust) and also the dress up characters like Mickey and his friends.

Disney provides you with accommodation, transport to the parks, free entry on days off, and job experience at an internationally renowned company.

Camp America

Many of you will probably have heard of Camp America – the company that has sent thousands of Brits abroad to work at summer camps just like the one you saw in Parent Trap! However this is just one of many of companies offering the same experience, so make sure to shop around and compare customer reviews and the admin fee they charge to process your application.

Successful candidates will get to work for a minimum of 8 weeks at camps all over America, before having a month afterwards to travel around the US of A with fellow camp employees from all over the world!

Applications are already open, so get busy and stand out from the crowd.

Hotel Resort Work

There are plenty of hospitality jobs up for grabs in the summer months across Europe and the USA.  A variety of positions are available to suit your needs, whether that’s working as a childcare rep in a kids club, serving cocktails at the pool bar or even getting involved in teaching water sports. However, do keep in mind that many of these positions require qualifications, so it’s good to get looking as soon as possible.

Au Pair

Au pairing is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture, looking after a host family’s kids whilst improving your language skills. Many families want students to work for them through the summer months, particularly in countries where children are out of school for longer periods that conveniently match your university break. However if you’re not learned in a European language, American and Irish families also advertise. Accommodation is provided throughout your stay, plus pocket money for exploring all that the local area and beyond has to offer.

Bar work

With destinations including Ibiza, Malia, Zante, Magaluf and Tenerife, these jobs are great for those of you who want a summer of fun in a party atmosphere. You’ll work in local pubs and restaurants at night and during the day you’ll be free to enjoy the perfect combination of sun, sea and sand – provided that your hangover isn’t too hellish!

One month’s accommodation is also included with PlayaWay, and a range of arrival dates are available to suit you.
