Shottingham: Who’s Been Behaving Badly?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

You might have heard Nottingham being referred to as ‘Shottingham’, well defined by Urban Dictionary for us:

But we wanted to investigate the real, every day crimes that are happening in Nottingham. Here are some of the more amusing local criminals, who’ve been in the news and courtrooms this September.

The food fiends

•      50 year old Mr Jackson stole £15 worth of bacon from Iceland, he had to pay £15 compensation and a £15 victim surcharge.

•      A 33 year old lady from Hucknall stole fresh meat worth £114.52 from a Co-op store.

•        Bottles of Smirnoff and Bacardi were stolen by a 15 year old boy in Long Eaton. After pleading guilty, he was given a 6 month conditional discharge and was ordered to pay Asda £5 compensation.

Twoccers (local Nottingham slang for ‘taken without owner’s consent’)

•      A jet ski and trailer were stolen from a home in Coddington.

  • During the tram works in Beeston copper piping has been stolen as well as a digger.

The Train Hijackers (yes there has been more than one case of train hijacking reported during September!)

  • A train hijacker claimed he was a CIA agent, the train moved about 50 yards down the tracks before it was stopped and the passenger taken off the train.

Three people were arrested following a suspected Greenpeace protest. They stood a model polar bear on train tracks, causing a 1,500 tonne coal train to stop near Retford. Five freight trains were also affected by this as around 50 activists were on board the train filling bags with coal during the seven hour hijack.

Petty thieves

•      A man stole some mouthwash from Boots.

•      Poundland reported a man who stole a razor, shaving cream and shaving foil – items worth a grand total of £3.

In Toton, £3298.30 worth of cigarettes and perfume was stolen in Asda by a 40 year old lady. He’s clearly not a deterrent for some people.

Caught Out By The Safety Police

•      Mr Freeman was ordered to pay £646.32, (£400 fine, £20 victim surcharge and £226.32 Crown Prosecution Costs) after not picking up his dog’s mess.

•        A mum and daughter were forced to get off the tram as the four year had also brought her bike on board. They were going to the park but were kicked off after two stops. It’s unknown whether they reached the park or not.

•        A great grandmother won her case after police officers accused her of not wearing her seatbelt in a parked car.

The Elderly Gunman

  • A 67 year old man was handed an 18 month suspended prison sentence after injuring a 13 year old boy with a shotgun. He fired pellets at the youth to frighten him after reports of vandalism in the area. It was said that the widower had shooting experience and if he had wanted to kill someone he could have but the boy was only injured with pellet wounds.

If you have been affected by crime or have any information on crimes in Nottingham or your local area call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers UK on 0800 555 111.

Leona is a final year languages student. This year she's back in Nottingham after spending her year abroad in the Canary Islands and China. She is sporty, curious and has a weakness for Kit Kat Chunkys.
Sam is a Third Year at the University of Nottingham, England and Campus Correspondent for HC Nottingham. She is studying English and would love a career in journalism or marketing (to name two very broad industries). But for now, her favourite pastimes include nightclubs, ebay, cooking, reading, hunting down new music, watching thought-provoking films, chatting, and attempting to find a sport/workout regime that she enjoys!
