Whether you love it or hate it, there is no denying that there are huge health benefits to running. Alongside getting fit, it is also one of the best ways to lose weight, get better skin and improve general happiness. Here are 5 top tips to help you catch the bug;

1)  Get up early

Set your alarm and get up and out there. By doing it in the morning it means you’ll have done your exercise for the day and it is also proven that those who work out in the morning tend to make healthier decisions throughout the rest of the day.

2)  Set yourself a target

AND STICK TO IT. Be realistic. If you haven’t run much before, you won’t be running a marathon next month. Sign up for a run you know is achievable; websites like Runners World publish details about runs all over the country, from sub 5km to Ultra marathons.

3)  Compete with yourself

Following on from number two; compete with yourself and your own ability. There are always going to be people who are faster and fitter than you; rather than compare yourself to them work hard to improve your own time and distance. Apps like RunKeeper (a personal favourite of mine) map your distance, pace per mile and general progress, a great way to keep on track.  For beginners Couch to 5k is another fab app to help you find your running feet.

4)  Train with a friend

By arranging to meet friends to run with, you’ve made an agreement with someone, making it much easier to follow through. You’ll also be able to encourage one another and even make it into a social event.

          5) The right gear

Without the right trainers, you can seriously damage your feet. Many fitness stores, such as Nike and Asics, can give you a gait test to ensure you have the right shoe to support your foot.

            Happy running!
