Gringo’s A-Z Guide to Brazil

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

An encyclopaedic guide to all you can see, taste, smell, dance to and be amazed by in Brazil!

A is for… Amazon, all you can eat buffets and Açaí-

‘Crying fruit’. A fruity purple pulp.  Often topped with banana, granola, strawberries and condensed milk with the odd jelly tot if you’re lucky!

B is for… BIG BUM-BUMS! It’s no myth; the Brazilian booty really does put Nicki Minaj and Kim K to shame.  Here is a cheeky snap taken by my friend on the bus:

The country even celebrates the wonders of the Brazilian behind by hosting an annual ass contest in American pageantry style, ‘Miss Bum Bum Brasil’.

Saggy rear? Have no fear! Giant padded knickers are here!

No need for surgery or suffering the 30 day squat challenge, bag yourself a pair of these bum enhancer panties and fake it: (available in Primark!)

C is for… Copacabana , Carnaval and Caipirinha (The nation’s favourite cocktail).

D is for… Dolphins. And not just any dolphins- PINK ones! These freshwater friends are found in the Amazon River!

E is for… Escadaria Selarón (a.k.a Snoop Dogg steps) in Rio de Janeiro.

F is for…Football, favelas and Feijoada-  typical Brazilian delicacy of stewed black beans and pork.

G is for…

Guaraná … A popular fizzy drink!

G is also for… Gringo- That’s you and I!  (Portuguese slang for foreigner.)

H is for… Havaianas.

I is for… Iguassu Falls. One of the majestic 7 natural wonders of the world.

J is for… Jesus! Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro.

K is for… Kilo buffets. Load up your plate and pay for what you weigh!

L is for… Lapa Street party, Rio de Janeiro.

Party animal? Every weekend the neighbourhood of Lapa hosts a FREE street party with live samba and king sized strawberry caipirinhas.

M is for … Markets.  Hit the hippy market in Ipanema for quirky souvenirs and Bahian street food.

N is for… Neymar, the Brazilian footy hero! Still not sure how we feel about the new hair-do though…

O is for… Olinda.  This colourful, colonial toy town in the North East is home to giant carnival dolls and multi-coloured casas!

Balamory or Brazil?

P is for… Praia do Amor (Beach of Love). Appropriately named heart shaped beach in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte.

Q is for… Queijo, Pao de … Kill your cheesy-carb cravings with these doughy delights!

Q is also for… Qual é o seu nome? Translation: ‘What’s your name?’ (Essential chat up line for pulling the hot surfer babes).

R is for…

Rodízio – another all-you-can- eat style eatery. Do like the locals do. Scoff down unlimited slabs of prime steak and BBQ meat on giant skewers and then, if you’re brave enough, samba the night (and the carbs) away!

Also, Rodrigo Santoro. Brazilian actor and heart throb. As seen in Love Actually and the Chanel ad starring Nicole Kidman. We like him.

S is for… Samba, Surf culture and Sugarloaf Mountain.

T is for… Thong (tiny one) and a tattoo. Your Brazilian beach wardrobe sorted. Less is definitely more.

U is for… Unbeatable beaches.

Porto de Galinhas, Rio Grande do Norte.

V is for… Victoria’s Secret models.

Brazilian-born beauties Adriana Lima and Giselle are two prime examples.

Jealous? Not us. Who needs a perfect bod and long, luscious hair anyway?

W is for… Wax, Brazilian style. Ouch!

X is for…  X(kiss) on the shoulder

No. 1 hit by Lady Ga-Ga of Brazil, Valesca Poupozada (Whose name means big booty!)

X is also for ‘Xi-Xi’= pronounced ‘she-she’, Brazilian Portuguese slang meaning ‘wee-wee!’

Y is for… Yellow and green. The colours of possibly the most vibrant flag on the planet!

Z is for… Zzzz. Zone out in your hammock. Nothing beats lying back and relaxing after a beach sesh.
