Good Goings On in November

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

The coming month’s instalment of places to go and things to do in Nottingham, but these aren’t just any things, no. These are super things, heroic things one might even say. The sort of things that Clark Kent would do if he hung around the Midlands, or that Angelina Jolie might lend her hand to. Seriously good stuff.

Shop of the month: Evolution

Evolution is a hidden gem of a shop, tucked away upstairs in the Victoria Centre. It is an ethical charity shop selling gifts, home furnishings and cool things that you didn’t know you needed. It pleasingly has very student-friendly prices too!

Café/restaurant of the month: Alley Cafe

Another one that is easy to walk past. In an alley just opposite Nando’s, the Alley Café and Bar is vegetarian, vegan, organic, fairtrade and generally a really friendly place! They also have regular open mic nights and art exhibitions if you are looking for more reasons to go. Check out their online menu to see how much great stuff they have.

1st November: Diwali celebrations

Meet at 16.30 at the Lakeside Café in Highfields Park (right next to campus) to join in traditional Diwali activities and learn about the celebration of light’s victory over darkness.

3rd and 6th November: Blood donations on campus

You can genuinely save people’s lives by doing this. In fact, just one unit of your blood can save three lives! All it takes is a half hour of your time, some wonderful nurses, a needle and some free tea and biscuits afterwards.

Sessions are 10.30-15.00 at the sports centre but it is worth booking yourself in beforehand if you have the chance.  I’ll be there.

5th November: SB Farmers Market

Another installation of our famous Farmer’s Market held from 11.30 until 15.30 at Sutton Bonington campus. If you haven’t sampled the AMAZING produce sold at this market then get your boots on otherwise you’ll miss out on the best burgers, veggie hot dogs, pies, cider, cake, fudge, hot chocolate and…actually… Why am I telling more people to come? What if they sell out before I get my samosas? You know what, you probably won’t like this sort of thing anyway…ahem.

8th November: a double whammy today!

–       Firewalk for charity

Raise money for My Sight Nottinghamshire, which supports local blind and partially sighted people by firewalking at Nottingham Castle accompanied by drummers and lit by flaming torches! Sounds crazy right? Well to make the night even more atmospheric, watch the Castle’s Guy Fawkes fireworks display afterwards, with food stalls and live music all night.

Starting at 19.00 at the Castle.

–       Vintage Fayre

Run by local boutique “Vintage to a Tea”, have a rummage through vintage jewellery, clothes and more in Trinity Square from 10.00 until 16.00. Remember, if it is vintage, it is good for the environment!

9th November: Remembrance Day service and parade

The Centennial anniversary of World War One where we remember all the men who gave their lives for us. Get the number 11 bus from Broadmarsh Collin Street bus stops to Embankment to watch the city’s full Remembrance Day service with the Lord Mayor and troops for 11.00.

You can also watch the parade at 12.00 from St Mary’s church (near Pitcher and Piano) to Old Market Square where there will be two minutes silence and a gunned salute.

16th-17th November: Local food fair

Try some of the best local food and drinks in Old Market Square at the Nottingham Regional and Speciality Food Market!

22nd November: Nottingham Women’s Conference

Being held at the Nottingham Girls School by Forest Recreational Ground the conference will cover the topics of “Patriarchy, Male Violence Against Women and Girls, Women’s Health, Women Fight Back and Feminist Mothering”.

Running from 9.30 til 17.30, tickets are £25

I'm a fourth year at the University of Nottingham and I never want to leave. I blog about easy ways to make a difference in our world and to our community and I spend most of my life online. When the wifi is down though I love to bake, play with dogs, go exploring, maybe do some coursework and (pretend that I can) sing and dance.
