The Best Easy-to-Use Eyeliners for the Perfect Wing

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Winged eyeliner is probably one of the most timeless, classic makeup looks. It’s been worn by some of the world’s most iconic beauty figures who have each introduced their own  various ways of how to wing it. From Cleopatra’s eye framing liner to Twiggy’s graphic cat eyes, and Marilyn Monroe’s alluring kitten flick to the killer Kardashian knife wings. There is a wing that suits every eye, no matter what the shape or size. Placing a wing at the outer corner of the eye not only makes eyes stand out, it makes them appear brighter, more elongated, and also more lifted (see Disney’s Princess Jasmine) making the whole face look more defined and tightened.

Winged liner is an art that has been practiced for years and now it’s simply getting thicker, longer, and most importantly sharper. These wings were made to #SLAY and Instagram would certainly agree since it’s beauty users have been obsessed with the look for quite some time now, and frequently use captions such as ‘Eyeliner on fleek’ or ‘Wings on point’. All very familiar, but I think most of us can agree that it is actually one of the most difficult makeup looks to master. Along with the ‘eyeliner goals’, we’ve all seen the ‘eyeliner fails’ memes too, right? It takes careful plotting, absolute precision, and a very steady hand… #Skills. If like me, however, you don’t possess any of those three qualities you are in luck! I’m going to tell you about the easiest to use eyeliners that actually do some of the work for you to ensure your eyeliner applying process is as stress free as possible. I’m not going to say it will be effortless, but with some practise you will be sure to get a perfect wing every time.

L’Oreal Paris Super Liner Perfect Slim, £5.99 Let’s start with the L’Oreal Paris Super Liner Perfect Slim. This, being a felt tip pen liner, is extremely easy to use. Even if you’re not an artist, drawing a smooth line with this product is super easy! The tip is spongy, smooth, and tapers into a 0.4mm point which means no tugging, easy gliding, and good precision. The tapered point also means you can shift between thick and thin lines very easily, which is best for a cat eye. Start with the pointed end in the inner corner of the eye for a thin line, gradually build up to a slightly thicker line at the centre of the eye lid and keep building at the outer corner for the beginning of the wing. Finally, use the pointed end to draw out the point of the wing. The formula is thin, dries to a semi-matte finish, and is jet black. It’s hard to believe that this eyeliner is drugstore, as it really does tick all the boxes.

Rimmel Exaggerate Eye liner, £5.29 Rimmel Exaggerate Eye Liner is in the form of the traditional liquid liners, a small pot with an applicator. Normally these aren’t the best if you struggle with winged liner but this product is different. It has a firm pointed tip so you can easily get the solid shape that you want and forget about those old, shapeless, scrappy, brushes. The tip is also small and it’s perfect for drawing a simple kitten flick, or even building up to a more dramatic wing. Instead of the watery, eye-stinging, patchy formula of the traditional liquid liners this has a creamy texture, which is highly pigmented and completely opaque. The formula is very wet but dries fast to a striking jet black matte finish just like a liquid matte lipstick but for eyes.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, £14.50 Now, the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner is much pricier than the previous liners, but because of its cult status as one of the best products around, it just had to be included on the list. It’s famous for being used by professional makeup artists, but most importantly it is incredibly easy to apply, which means that it’s even perfect for those of us who are less experienced. This felt tip eyeliner allows you to have full ease and control during the application process, and can help you master anything from a lash-hugging tight line to the sharpest wing ever, while also providing you with ultimate precision thanks to the ultra-thin tip. The formula glides on smoothly, revealing an intense blackest-black colour which stays perfect all day long with no smudges or fading.
