As part of our USA themed week, we interviewed Loren Querickiol, Publicity/Communications Officer of AmeriCan society at UoN, to hear about what they get up to staying in touch with home on this side of the pond…

1. Who is AmeriCan society for?

AmeriCan Society was initially created for all students of all years studying American and Canadian Studies, but has grown to welcome students coming from those countries as well as anyone interested in American/Canadian culture.

2. What sort of things do you do as a society?

We have 3 main focuses: Socials. Sport. Support. We have a variety of amazing socials ranging from frat parties, American themed dinners and nights out, trips to ice hockey games, quiz nights, beer pong tournaments, an end of year ball and, the highlight of the year – the Boat Cruise.

Our AmeriCanSoc sports teams consist of netball and football with an awesome Sports Sec who helps organise both games and socials for the teams. On top of all of this, we also offer academic support by keeping members updated on any careers events or talks specifically related to their course.

We also hold events to help integrate all years of the society together, which we hope empowers members to guide one another; particularly those looking to study abroad. We’ve just started a Buy/Sell Facebook page for AmeriCan Studies used books as well!

3. What has been your favourite part about being in AmeriCan?

Definitely seeing engaged freshers. Our society is one to really attract students from the beginning of their course and we intend to keep them active during their entire stay at uni and hopefully run for committee positions!

4. Do you have any events coming up?

Our next event is the Thanksgiving Dinner at Browns on the evening of Thanksgiving itself, 23 November. It’ll be a cosy sit-down meal with 2-3 courses, and the committee is also baking a pumpkin pie in true American tradition!! Before the term ends we will also have Arts Ball where we will be collaborating with other Arts societies to really make it (Trump voice) HUGE.

5. How can other students get involved?

Other students are always welcome to our socials or to join a sports team. If there are any American or Canadians reading this out there, please join to make the experience for home students as genuine and authentic to the culture as possible.
