8 Inspirational Bad-ass Mothers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Mothers’ Day is coming up on Sunday 15th March. I’d say that all of us have one woman in our lives that shows us that unconditional, motherly love. The kind of love that we feel on the end of the phone after a crappy day spent in Hallward, or the kind of love shown when she tells us to ‘perhaps not’ buy that garish, sequinned dress that you’ll ‘probably never wear’. She’s the one who puts your needs above every single one of her own, gives you the most real – and, damn, BRUTAL – advice and lets you use/take advantage of her fancy, expensive face/hair/make-up/nail products (Momma, you’ll get your Gucci lipstick back one day, I promise). It doesn’t matter whether this person is your biological mother, an aunty, a grandmother, sister, god-mother, best friend… the maternal love that some women give to others never fails to amaze me and make me weirdly emotional. Here are some of my favourite mother figure-daughter combinations…

1) Tina Knowles, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Blue Ivy Carter

There’s no doubt about it, Beyoncé definitely got her fierceness from her mother Tina, who styled every one of those outfits she used to wear in Destiny’s Child and in her earlier career. And from the looks of it, Beyoncé’s passing this down to her beautiful daughter, Blue Ivy. To everyone shocked by the sensuality of her latest album, saying those words that make me shudder: “But she’s a MOTHER!” NEWS FLASH: if you’re a mother, you can and have every right to be sexy. Praise be to Beyoncé.

2) Lorelai and Rory Gilmore

I definitely just teared up at the first image. If any of you have ever watched Gilmore Girls, I can guarantee there was a little lump in your throat just now, too. Lorelai serving out some top quality motherly advice right there.

3) Kris Jenner and Kourtney/Kim/Khloe/Kendall/Kylie

“But Kris Jenner is a complete MOMAGER!” Well, haters can hate. This lady still raised five fiery daughters (plus a son) – not the easiest of tasks. Sure, her methods of ensuring the success of her daughters are pretty questionable at times, but since Keeping Up With The Kardashians is my guilty pleasure and this woman has me in stitches every episode, I’m putting her on this list.

4) Sam (Hilary Duff) and her fairy god-mother Rhonda in A Cinderella Story

Come on, we’ve all seen this film before whether we willingly admit it to other people or not. Rhonda is the best part of A Cinderella Story for forcing Hilary Duff – sorry, ‘Sam’ – to do whatever the hell she wants. She takes Sam under her wing and even gives Sam her own wedding dress to wear to a fancy dress ball… bit weird, but nevertheless showing selflessness and downright generosity.

5) Jerry Hall and Georgia May Jagger

Probably the most rock and roll duo on the list are Jerry Hall and Georgia May Jagger. Since Jerry is one of the world’s biggest supermodels, it’s only natural that she often models alongside her stunning daughter Georgia. They even did a Mother’s Day campaign in association with Sunglasses Hut a couple of years ago (pictured above). The closest thing I have to this with my mum is when she requests an impromptu photoshoot… (pictures never to surface, ever).

6) Sharon and Kelly Osbourne

Sharon and Kelly Osbourne both seem to share an erratic and wild side of their personalities, judging on how they come across on TV. Both have such similar facial features and laughs, it’s pretty scary. Here we can see Sharon letting another parent know who’s the boss-mom.

7) Molly Weasley

I didn’t list Molly Weasley’s children because I feel like she’s the mother of the entire population of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter series, not just her biological children. Molly is the mother hen for all the stray children in the series. She’s the kind of mother who worries when you don’t call her for 24 hours assuming you’re dead, but also the number one person who sticks up for you (in Molly’s case, casts spells on people who try to kill you).

8) Tina Fey and Alice and Penelope Fey

I just had to include Tina Fey on this list because she must be the most hilarious mother ever, to her two daughters Alice and Penelope. One of my favourite quotes of hers comes from the end of a poem she wrote called ‘A Prayer for my Daughter’:

“And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back.

“My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.

Amen.”

If that’s not enough to make you go and call the amazing woman in your life right away, then I don’t know what will.

Final year English Language and Literature student. Likes: cheese, the colour black, and bearded men.
Sam is a Third Year at the University of Nottingham, England and Campus Correspondent for HC Nottingham. She is studying English and would love a career in journalism or marketing (to name two very broad industries). But for now, her favourite pastimes include nightclubs, ebay, cooking, reading, hunting down new music, watching thought-provoking films, chatting, and attempting to find a sport/workout regime that she enjoys!
