7 Iconic Movie Outfits of All Time

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Films are a great source of outfit inspiration, and some movies over the years are not only memorable for their story but also for their outfits. There have been so many films over the years that have helped to start trends, making them truly unforgettable and allowing costume designers to shine and produce stunning masterpieces.

Cinderella is the ultimate princess, so when the film, starring Lily James, was remade in 2015, the dress had to be perfect. The whole outfit is absolutely stunning; the beautiful blue a colour which would look great on anyone. This ball gown took 500 hours to make, using 8 skirts and 111,000 Swarovski crystals to create a dress fit for a princess.

For those of you wanting to channel the 40s and 50s, the film Carol is a beautiful nod to the era. It’s set in 1952, so think dresses cinched in at the waist, top handle bag and vintage sunglasses. There are so many beautiful outfits for every occasion in this film such as…

Atonement is a great wartime film starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. It is set in pre and during World War II and features some very interesting twists. There are great outfits throughout, but there is one emerald-coloured dress in particular that is particularly memorable. It was designed by the talented Jacqueline Durran and the colour was specifically requested by the director to suggest jealousy and temptation, two main themes of the film.

A movie classic, Breakfast at Tiffany’s features one of the most famous little black dresses of all time. Audrey Hepburn’s dress was designed by one of the best, Hubert de Givenchy, founder of Givenchy. This dress is just as iconic as the film, and is great inspiration for your next little black dress purchase.

Cleopatra is one of the most famous rulers in history, so who better to portray her than the one and only Elizabeth Taylor? With the on-point winged eye-liner, chunky gold jewellery and a series of 26,000 outfits, this film had to be included. It helped to popularise arm cuffs, maxi dresses and snake rings. The most iconic outfit has to be the 24 carat gold cloth cape made to look like the wings of a phoenix.

Who wasn’t envious of Cher Horowitz in Clueless; she knew how to dress and gave the best makeovers. With all the plaid, matching separates, and even her fashionable P.E. attire, she offered outfit inspiration for an entire generation.

Now for a musical number that has songs just as iconic as the outfits featured. Grease, starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta made biker jackets cool for both men and women. The real gem of an outfit, however, was the black off-the-shoulder top, and black high-waisted leather trousers worn by Sandy in the final scenes. When paired with gold hoops, red lips and heels, this is an outfit sure to get everyone’s attention.

So next time you’re watching a film, take a look at some of the different outfits featured; they’re a great source of inspiration!
