7 Childhood Disney Villains You Didn’t Think Could Be Style Icons

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

So it’s that time of year again where you’re wondering what to wear for the Crisis all-frighter, or that Hallowe’en house party you’ve been invited to. Well, I’m not going to attempt to suggest fancy dress ideas (because let’s face it, you’ll almost definitely go as a cat) but instead praise those evil, twisted fashion style icons from back the in the day to embody this week on campus. Embrace the Hallowe’en spirit!

1. Maleficent, Sleeping Beauty

As a child I was petrified of the cartoon version of Maleficent. Only now at the ripe age of 21 can I see the beauty of her cape. Bag yourself this kimono and enjoy twirling around in it:

ASOS, £48

Although I haven’t seen the newest version of Maleficent, I’m a huge Angelina Jolie fan. There is a LOT I could write about how I adore her look in the remake, but the main thing has to be her make-up. Try a deep and bold red lip on your next night out; my go-to brand for lipstick is MAC. Slightly pricey but worth the extra money in my opinion…I’m dying to try the shade Good Kisser.

MAC, £15.50

2. Cruella De Vil, 101 Dalmatians

Cigarette-puffing, husky-voiced and crazy-eyed Cruella De Vil is one of the classiest childhood villains (putting her puppy slaughter plan aside). Cruella is all about the fur coat and now that it’s feeling a little chillier in Nottingham, it’s the perfect time to invest in that staple furry coat that you won’t want to take off.

ASOS, £75

3. The Evil Queen, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

So after googling this lady’s name, it appears she is so evil that her name is actually just The Evil Queen – short and simple. She’s devious, conniving, and impossibly vain – but above all, her style is on point. Her key piece has got to be her gold crown. Instead of turning up to your 9am seminar wearing a crown on your head, I suggest investing in some kind of subtle headpiece to wear out. My favourites are all from Miss Selfridge:

£8.50

£10

£8.50

4. Lady Tremaine, Cinderella

Let’s face it – pretty much the biggest crime your mother ever committed against you

Some see her as a cruel, abusive step-mother – I hail her as Lady of the High Collar. Come rain or shine, Lady Tremaine is never caught slipping from her regal posture. I also love that deep red, almost burgundy, colour of her dress which I view as a perfect autumnal colour. Elongate your neck by trying something similar from Missguided – a HUGE bargain for only £5.99:

5. Ursula, The Little Mermaid

‘How could crazy Ursula provide any kind of style advice?’ I hear you all screaming. I suppose it’s fair – she’s lived in a cave with a couple of eels for a pretty long time. Oh, and not to mention, she’s an octopus. But you can’t deny that her body confidence is through the ROOF! She embraces her shape and exploits every single curve by channelling the staple that is every single girl’s best friend – the Little Black Dress. Ursula’s is strapless, so I’ve found a few similar ones to suit any body type:

Topshop, £49

This is probably the closest to Ursula’s style you could get – if you’re blessed with the confidence to rock a strapless dress with a cheeky plunge, go for this one. If, like me, the thought of bodycon puts you off a little, fear not. Shops in the high street at the moment are decked out with alternatives:

River Island, £45

I LOVE the detailing on the back of this dress and it will also highlight the narrowest part of your waist, giving an hourglass silhouette.2 of my other favourites are considerably cheaper and both from ASOS:

ASOS, £15

ASOS, £19.99

6. The Queen of Hearts, Alice In Wonderland

To be honest, this entire film caused me many-a-nightmare when I was younger, and I found the Queen of Hearts pretty much the most disturbing thing I’d ever seen. However, what I can admire now that I couldn’t before is her killer pairing of the colours black and red – something which ASOS is 100% winning at. Take a look at my favourites from ASOS:

£10… THIS IS A BARGAIN

(£32 – perfect for layering under/over other pieces of clothing when you can’t figure out what is appropriate to wear for this current temperature

£55 – discounted from £75, I love this dress so much I could genuinely cry.

£38 – discounted from £85!!!! Literally so impressed with you right now, ASOS

£3 – I personally can’t really pull off the knee-high sock look but I know so many girls that can, without looking too schoolgirl

7. ‘Bad’ Princess Jasmine, Aladdin

Last but not least, we have my all-time favourite. Maybe this is cheating because she is most definitely not a villain, but Princess Jasmine’s ‘bad girl’ image potentially makes her the sexiest female in all the land, and that’s why I decided to include it here. In this scene I suppose she is a little devious when she seduces Jafar. From the bright red outfit to the gold arm cuff, there’s nothing that I wouldn’t wear in this entire ensemble. Here are a couple of suggestions to recreate the look:

(Topshop, £60)

Forever 21, £7.40

Final year English Language and Literature student. Likes: cheese, the colour black, and bearded men.
Sam is a Third Year at the University of Nottingham, England and Campus Correspondent for HC Nottingham. She is studying English and would love a career in journalism or marketing (to name two very broad industries). But for now, her favourite pastimes include nightclubs, ebay, cooking, reading, hunting down new music, watching thought-provoking films, chatting, and attempting to find a sport/workout regime that she enjoys!
