5 Best Places to Eat Around Nottingham

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

Welcome to my new food blog introducing a few of the most student-friendly places to eat out in Notts.

Mooch

Nottingham Uni’s very own Student Union bar is tucked away on the bottom floor of Portland.  Warm up between lectures with a steaming mug of hot chocolate or grab dinner before your society meeting. The menu has different deals every week night so you can grab yourself a main and a soft drink for less than six pounds, making it student-budget friendly.

The  Ropewalk

Situated by Canning Circus, this pub/bar is only a ten minute walk from Lenton and serves great pub grub – HerCampus Nottingham recommends the burger and fries. Pop by the pub quiz, held every Sunday night, or go to the eclectic variety of open-mic nights and fundraising events held throughout the year.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem

Officially England’s Oldest Inn, this pub is built into the caves that Nottingham castle sits on so it’s steeped in history. It serves really tasty home cooked meals – I love the lasagne served with ciabatta and salad. Pop in for a piece of history and if you fancy learning more about the pub’s history why not sign up for one of the cellar tours which run daily during the week?!

Red Hot Buffet

This place is the food equivalent of Disneyland – in other words it’s tackiness taken to a whole new (food) level. Although not exclusive to Nottingham, the chain started here and moved to its current location below the Cornerhouse last year. Themed around an airport, you’re greeted by air hostesses before being led down to a ‘duty-free’ bar. In the main room, the selection of food on offer is ridiculous – even the pickiest eater would struggle not to find something to binge on. As it’s a buffet you can refuel as many times as you want so grab your male flatmates, strap yourself into one of the real first- class aeroplane seats and gorge!

Countless takeaways

Okay, so you might have already eaten food from one of these (ahem) wonderful establishments in Freshers’ Week but have no memory of doing so.  If you didn’t, you’ll probably find yourself drunkenly attempting to order from one at 3am after Ocean. You might not dare eat the food sober but when you’re drunk that kebab seems like your Mum’s Sunday roast. There’s no guarantee it will ease the hangover on Saturday morning but it’s worth a try surely?! …

Bon appétit!

Sam is a Third Year at the University of Nottingham, England and Campus Correspondent for HC Nottingham. She is studying English and would love a career in journalism or marketing (to name two very broad industries). But for now, her favourite pastimes include nightclubs, ebay, cooking, reading, hunting down new music, watching thought-provoking films, chatting, and attempting to find a sport/workout regime that she enjoys!
