Top New Movies to Watch this October

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Fall is my favorite season for movies. Summer blockbusters are great and all, (Guardians of the Galaxy, anyone?) but it’s nice to watch movies that are more subtle about their awesomeness and more grown-up in their humor. Here are five movies coming out this month that look super promising!

The Judge

The Judge (October 10) is centered on a lawyer whose father, a judge, is a suspect for murder. Intriguing, but the real drawing point for this movie is the cast: Robert Downey Jr. stars alongside Billy Bob Thornton and Robert Duvall. Downey plays Duvall’s son, and Thornton is the prosecutor set on exposing both men as morally ambiguous with regard to their use of the law.

Dear White People

I could explain what Dear White People (October 17) is about, but I can’t do it justice. The cast looks superb, the topic is extremely relevant, and it just looks completely hilarious. It really is best to just watch the trailer in order grasp what a smart, hilarious satire this film promises to be. And after you watch the first trailer, watch the rest.

Camp X-Ray

She gets a lot of abuse for her role in the Twilight films, but Kristen Stewart’s new movie, Camp X-Ray (October 17) looks politically savvy and intriguing: Stewart is a soldier assigned to Guantanamo Bay who ends up befriending one of the prisoners there. A bit controversial, yes, but if you’re into movies that explore morally gray areas, this could be for you.

Nightcrawler

Nightcrawler (October 31) is (unfortunately) unrelated to the X-Men character of the same name, but that doesn’t stop it from attracting attention. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a freelance crime news reporter who apparently goes all Patrick Bateman as he jumps off the deep end. Even with just the trailer, it’s clear that Gyllenhaal’s performance is riveting and on point, completely mesmerizing because of something wrong that you can’t quite place.

Horns

Yes, it’s terrifying to see Harry Potter speaking with an American accent, but Horns (October 31) has a fantastic premise: after his girlfriend’s death, a man begins to grow horns, prompting hysteria from his town. It’s unique, a grown up fable without any of the forced “gritty reboot” qualities that have been popping up a lot in films recently. Plus, it’s based on the bestselling book of the same name by Joe Hill.

Are you ready to bring on the overpriced popcorn and fountain drinks this month?
