Finals vs. The 25 Days of Christmas: Can’t We Just Have Both?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

There are few things more annoying than having the ABC Family 25 Days of Christmas marathon coexist with the last few weeks of school, culminating in the most anti-holiday experience known to the struggling college student- Finals Week. Every cell in your brain is screaming to be allowed to deck the halls and sing Christmas songs while drinking eggnog and roasting chestnuts and all other manners of holiday cheer, but the restraints of long nights cramming and the stress of reading days are too strong to break. Never fear, HCND readers, contrary to popular belief, you can take a quick study break to rest your brain and restore your festive mindset. So grab that ugly holiday sweater and a cup of hot cocoa and settle on the couch to catch some of the best Christmas classics ABC Family has to offer.

Polar Express: Airing December 8, 9, 16, 17 Arguably one of the most magical Christmas movies to ever hit cinema, The Polar Express has its moments of humor, joy, and gut-wrenching cartoon sadness. The soundtrack alone is enough to get even the most stubborn of non-believers into hearing the jingle of sleigh bells outside their window. Finals got you in a bah-humbug kind of mood? Listen to “Believe” or “When Christmas Comes to Town” and you’ll be right back on that train to the North Pole.

The Year Without a Santa Claus: Airing December 9, 10, 11, 12, 16, 19, 22, 25 Made in 1974, The Year Without a Santa Claus can be described as the most feminist Christmas movie out there. When Santa falls ill, Mrs. Claus gets ready to wear to the red suit, fill in for her husband and save Christmas. Fighting against the Heat Miser, Cold Miser and Mother Earth, Mrs. Claus shows that female determination and a little holiday spirit goes a long way.

Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town: Airing December 11, 12, 15, 16, 22, 23, 25 Another great classic, watch the origins of Santa Claus from young boy to beloved toymaker unfold. Complete with an incredible love story and musical numbers to warm the hear, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town is a great example of the true giving spirit of the holidays. Also, if study struggles have got you down, listen to “Put One Foot in Front of the Other”; it’s some advice every student could follow.

Elf: Airing December 9, 10, 12, 13, 15, 16, 20, 21, 24, 25No Christmas movie collection is complete without the appearance of the fan favorite. Grab your spaghetti and marshmallows and enjoy the humor and good feels movie about conquering winter blues and believing in the unbelievable.

Hi everyone, I'm Margaret! I'm a sophmore in Cavanaugh Hall (embrace the Chaos) and I'm majoring in Neuroscience with a minor in Science, Technology and Values. I'm from Falmouth, Maine where I work for a company that makes really awesome bags and purses from old boat sails. In my spare time, I love to dance, read, and binge watch series on Netflix. I also pride myself on my skills as a foodie, so if any one knows of places to get good grub around South Bend, I'd love to hear about them! Notre Dame has been my dream school practically since birth and I still haven't come down from cloud-nine yet despite the struggles of Organic Chemistry- here's hoping that feeling never goes away!
