10 Songs by Female Artists That Are Necessary For Every Collegiette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

It’s time to dust off that $10 iTunes gift card your grandma gave you for Easter or think about finally biting the bullet and becoming a premium member on Spotify, because I’m serious when I say these songs are necessary as college women.

“Feeling Myself” – Nicki Minaj ft. Beyoncé

Why it’s important: It’s a known fact that no one does female empowerment like Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj, so, this song is pretty much everything.

Lyrics to live by: “I stopped the world / Male or female, it make no difference / I stop the world, world stop…carry on”

“Comeback” – Ella Eyre

Why it’s important: The ultimate angry breakup song, Ella is amazing at reminding us that we’re awesome and that even the ones who break our hearts will come crawling back eventually.

Lyrics to live by: “It’s not your job to show this boy some education”

“Never Grow Up” – Taylor Swift

Why it’s important: When graduation is on the horizon and you’re due for a good cry, this song will remind you how fast life can go but hopefully make you appreciate the time you still have in college that much more.

Lyrics to live by: “Remember the footsteps, remember the words said / And all your little brother’s favorite songs / I just realized everything I have is someday gonna be gone”

“Sledgehammer” – Fifth Harmony

Why it’s important: A great song for describing the excitement we all get when we meet someone new.

Lyrics to live by: “My body’s telling / All the secrets I ain’t told you yet”

“Folding Chair” – Regina Spektor

Why it’s important: There is nothing quite like a Regina song and they are nearly impossible to describe without listening to them. “Folding Chair” is simply a song that will make you feel content within yourself and your life.

Lyrics to live by: “I got a perfect body / But sometimes I forget / I got a perfect body / Cause my eyelashes catch my sweat”

“Rap for Rejection” – Kate Nash

Why it’s important: The definitive feminist anthem.

Lyrics to live by: “You’re tryna tell me sexism doesn’t exist? / If it doesn’t exist, then what the f*** is this?”

“Dear No One” – Tori Kelly

Why it’s important: For every independent woman who is happy being alone but occasionally catches herself wondering what it would be like to meet the ever elusive “one,” this is your new favorite song.

Lyrics to live by: “So if your out there I swear to be good to you / But I’m done lookin’ for my future someone / Cause when the time is right / You’ll be here, but for now / Dear no one this is your love song”

“Body Love” – Mary Lambert

Why it’s important: Every self-love song is important, but something about Lambert’s use of spoken word makes this one of the most powerful things you will hear in a while.

Lyrics to live by: “You are no less valuable as a size 16 than a size 4 / You are no less valuable as a 32a than a 36c” (but pretty much the whole thing)

“Still Into You” – Paramore

Why it’s important: A perfect way to describe how you still feel about your SO or long-time bestie.

Lyrics to live by: “I should be over all the butterflies but I’m into you, I’m into you”

“Flawless” Remix – Beyoncé ft. Nicki Minaj

Why it’s important: For the poetic symmetry of beginning and ending this list with a Queen B and Barbie collab, because, again, no one does it better.

Lyrics to live by: “I woke up like this / We flawless, ladies tell ’em / Say ‘I look so good tonight'”
