Meet the Beatboxer in Freshman 15: Mark Fishman!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Name:  Mark Fishman

Year:  Sophomore

Major:  MMSS & Psychology

Relationship Status:  Single but lookin’ to not be(;

How did you learn to beat box?

I had a couple friends in my high school’s all-male a cappella group and they asked me to audition, but I didn’t sing.  They told me their beatboxer was graduating, so if I could teach myself how to beatbox, I was in.  So, I taught myself.  I kinda just beatboxed everywhere I went and watched videos online.  I did what I needed to do to be in the group.

What is your favorite part about being in Freshman 15?

I think it’s a great brotherhood of people who have a similar interest.   We love coming together to make music and have a great time, but when we’re not in rehearsal, they’re still my brothers.  We have a connection on stage, in rehearsals, and when were hanging out together.  Love those guys.

Aren’t they all cute!  Who doesn’t love men who can sing?  (Mark is in the middle, top row).

What does it feel like to “make the beat drop”?

I don’t do a lot of freestyle, but I guess when I get those drum fills for F15 I’m in the zone and leveling up.  You feel the groove and get into it.  It’s like when you go on a loop on a roller coaster and get to the top and “wpppttsschhawww”…(that is my best adaptation of a whip sound)

What else are you involved in on campus?

I am a member of Sigma Chi and I’m the Derby Days co-chair, which means I get to plan and produce the Derby Days week this winter.  I’m super excited for it.  I’m also in SCNO(Students consulting for non-profit organizations)….(hold on he’s humming)…I also participate in Sustained Dialogue and play IM sports.

What is the last song you listened to today?

Sunday Morning by Maroon 5.  (He has a soft side, ladies)  I’m into relaxed, chill music.  I’m not an EDM kind of guy.

Describe your perfect first date.

I’m not sure if I could answer that because I want it to be spontaneous in some sense.  Maybe some walking around and exploring, plus food(we feel you, Mark), and people watching.  I like to keep it interesting; I’m not a fan of the dinner and a movie thing.
