How to take Advantage of the Spring Weather

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

You survived winter quarter. You did it. Now you have to tend to your vitamin-D deficiency and take advantage of the spring weather because YOU DESERVE IT and it’d be a WASTE not to.

1.     Go to the Sailing Center

NU just opened up their gorgeous Sailing Centerthis past fall. It’s on south beach (in front of the new visitor center) and you can rent kayaks, paddleboards ($20/hour), sailboats and wind surfs for super affordable prices. Yes, Lake Michigan is cold and yes, it can be windy but, the adrenaline and life jacket keeps you warm and it’s a great workout for your arms. Also pictures of you paddle boarding in Lake Michigan with the Chicago Skyline in the background would make a really great instagram post.

2.     Go into the City

Your tuition goes towards these amazing intercampus shuttles that picks you up on Sheridan and drops you off in the heart of the Magnificent Mile. If you have a few hours, go enjoy the city (the bus ride is usually under 30 minutes). Check out the beautiful Chicago River, shop at the stores you can’t find in Evanston and treat yourself to some amazing food. I highly suggest Do-Rite Donuts (their chicken sandwiches are out of this world) and Eataly (they have a Nutella Bar)!

3.     Utilize Norris Outdoors

Did you know Norris rents out hammocks, coolers, lawn chairs, smores kits and sports equipment for super cheap? Why not stop by Norris Outdoors to pick up some hammocks and Frisbees, stock up a cooler with cool drinks and fresh fruit to spend a day out on the lakefill or the beach?

4.     Treat yourself to frozen custard

We’re so lucky to have an Andy’s posted up just a block from campus. It’s wrong not to have some refreshing Andy’s after a beautiful day outside. Because there are so many different toppings at Andy’s everyone can find their perfect flavor. They even have Italian ice right now (it has the consistency of an icy sorbet) that you can have next to your frozen custard. At first I was hesitant about mixing dairy with ice, but it was surprisingly delicious and absolutely refreshing.
