Stef on Sex: Public Display of Affection

By stefonsex

Twenty years ago, a PDA was the hottest new technology. PalmPilots were the best gift you could give, moving contacts from Rolodex to digitized form and events from planners pages to portable sheets. If your mom didn’t have one, a PalmPilot was like a very chunky, ugly handheld black and white screen with 1/1000 the capabilities of your new iPad. Now, the kind of PDA we all know best is something that’s gone digital too.

Boys rule, girls drool

By Lauren Cole
April 21, 2011 - 2:45pm

So maybe that sounds first grade, but real life isn’t too far off from the old playground adage. “Boy” things are considered cool and edgy while “girl” things are frivolous and silly. Take an example from the popular gal show “Sex and the City”. All of the girls gush about the movie “The Way We Were” except for Samantha, who dismisses it as a “chick flick”. The scene is meant to be funny, but it brings up a good point. A lot of “girl” things are dismissed while things meant for men get respect. That’s why guys only go to chick flicks on date night, while women regularly attend movies aimed at male audiences. And that’s a large part in why movies aimed at men make more money. READ MORE

Weighing in with Elizabeth: Maniac Marathoner

By Guest writer: Caroline
April 21, 2011 - 1:37am

Hi Everybody! It’s Caroline, Elizabeth’s favorite friend from home! I am writing this from bed where I have been laying motionlessly for the past 36 hours because this Monday I FINISHED THE BOSTON MARATHON AHHH! I sometimes still can’t believe I was able to do it, but any doubts I have disappear instantly when I try to stand up or walk somewhere, which usually results in some moaning and then crawling back into bed for a quick pre-walking-somewhere rest. But let me start with how this first began. READ MORE

Weighing in with Elizabeth: Running Rampant

By Elizabeth Lynch
April 14, 2011 - 3:18pm

I want to go back to basics today, friends. What is the most basic form of exercise that you can think of? Running. It requires no equipment and can be done anywhere. It makes you sweat, makes your legs (and arms, depending on how vigorous of an arm-pumper you are) feel sore, makes your breath come quick.

I have not always enjoyed running but for whatever reason, I’m on a kick right now. For the first time that I can think of, I just went for a run (a night run even! And I had already showered today!) just because I wanted to run. I was restless, I was worried about getting everything done that needed to get done, and so I just went.

Stef on Sex: NU So Springtime Scandalous

By stefonsex
April 12, 2011 - 1:59am

Let’s face it. NU’s social scene is not why we go here. NU’s dating scene is definitely not why we go here. Most of us spend a hefty chunk of the year behind furry hoods and heavy scarves staring at the ice-covered ground as we scuffle from class to class. And then, one day it’s 80 degrees. And you’re enjoying the sunshine for 15 minutes until you realize you’re sweating in your adorable sundress you just pulled out from underneath your bed, hoping spring is finally here. It’s bittersweet when it starts pouring to cool you down and you fantasize about that Notebook kiss actually happening in your own life. READ MORE

Weighing in with Elizabeth: Finding New Tracks

By Elizabeth Lynch
April 7, 2011 - 12:11pm

Hiya Northwestern! If you’ve been following my SELF blog, you probably won’t be surprised when I say… that I’ve been floundering a bit.

My spring break trip to Europe to visit friends threw me off track—as did finals, going home for a few days, the cold weather, the warm weather… the list goes on and on. In fact, I’ve been so off-track that I finally had to ask myself: Am I trying to follow the wrong track?

There’s a lot to be said for a character-building challenge. But you know what? Life should not be a constant struggle. If you’re finding it painful to stick to some regimen, you need to re-evaluate. I know I’ve said that before, but I actually followed it myself for the first time this week.

Weighing in with Elizabeth: Coming Back Down to Earth (or Illinois)

By Elizabeth Lynch
March 31, 2011 - 12:00am

Good morning, good morning! Today I am reflecting on being back from my spring break trip to Europe. I had an amazing time, and I ate everything I'd been dreaming of. (See: my first éclair in Paris after getting off the plane.) I don't regret enjoying myself last week, but I really am ready to have a schedule again.

Stef on Sex: Back to school, back to Stef on Sex

By stefonsex
March 29, 2011 - 12:26pm

I get to my second class of the day. Intro to PR. Lots of seniors, taught by a head university official guy in a suit with a melodic kind of voice that sounds perfect for public radio or important announcements. He says “Know your audience.” That refrain, so ever popular in my Journalism education continues to haunt me. I have NO IDEA who is reading this bi-weekly ‘narishkeit’ as my grandfather calls it. That’s pretty much Yiddish for BS. No relation to Bachelor of Science, the degree I will ideally obtain in the next few years. READ MORE
