8 Shows to Binge Watch This Summer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

As finals week is upon us, you dream of how you are going to make this summer vacation picture-perfect. While road trips and beach days will certainly make the list, there is one thing you cannot forget: choosing a show or two to become completely obsessed with and binge watch over the summer. Nothing says summer vacation like lounging on the couch, eating, and watching shows on your computer nonstop for hours. So, here is a list I have compiled of the best shows to watch this summer that will leave you saying just one more episode.

Empire

Seeing what outlandish outfit Taraji P. Henson’s character Cookie wears each episode should be enough of an incentive to watch this new show. Empire has been a huge hit for Fox and more than 16 million viewers watched the season finale, making it the best new series finale in 10 years. From jaw dropping family drama to incredible music, this show has something that everyone can truly enjoy.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Tina Fey has graced the world with another hit with this Netflix show. The series focuses on woman who has to adjust to living in New York City after being rescued from a doomsday cult in Indiana. Fey’s unique sense of humor is clearly present in the show which makes the unusual characters intriguing. The series has already been ordered a second season and the first season only has 13 episodes, so it is a quick watch.

Flash

There are many superhero shows on television right now, but this show seems to get the best reviews from television critics. This CW show stars Grant Gustin, who you might recognize from Glee, as the Flash. At first I was skeptical based on the teaser that was released before the show premiered and thought the series would come across as cheesy. However, the content of the show has certainly improved, so you should definitely give it a chance and watch at least one episode.

Orange is the New Black

With Netflix set to release the third season of this show next week, now is a great time to start watching this influential series. It has great actresses like Laverne Cox, Taylor Schilling, and Laura Prepon among a cast of extremely talented women.  The show focuses on Taylor Schilling’s character Piper Chapman who has been sentenced to 15 months in a women’s federal prison. The amount of awards this show has been nominated for proves that it is a must see.

Faking It

MTV’s scripted shows are usually either big hits or huge misses, and this show is certainly a hit! Although it started off with a bit of an odd premise  two high school girls pretending to date so that they can become popular  it has become a hilarious and addictive show. What makes the show so entertaining is the supporting characters’ and their sassy one-liners. There have only been two short seasons so far which means there is plenty of time to binge watch it this summer before the new season starts in the fall.

Devious Maids

Although the first episode of the third season aired earlier this week, many people do not know about this underappreciated show. It has the humor of the late and great Ugly Betty and the drama and mystery of Desperate Housewives. The show follows maids who clean houses for snobby Beverly Hills families. Naya Rivera recently joined the cast so this show is sure to be even better this season. It has unexpected twists and heartfelt characters that will make you want to continue watching.

Teen Wolf

I know, I know, another MTV show. But, this show is arguably the best-scripted show MTV has ever had. Somehow, the writers are able to perfectly combine horror and comedy which makes each episode better than the next. The relationships between the characters are so realistic despite the fact that most of them are supernatural beings. The ancient myths and legends included in the show means that cliché storylines are nowhere to be found. Plus, Dylan O’Brien stars. So, how could you not want to watch this show?

Gilmore Girls

Of course I could not make this list without including a classic that everyone should love. The mother-daughter relationship is unlike many on television today which will make you appreciate the relationship between Lorelai and Rory Gilmore. Each character has a personality quirk that will make you instantly connect with them. The only downside to binge watching this show is that it will leave you wondering why you have not met your Dean or Jess yet.
