2015 American Music Awards Recap

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

On November 22, the American Music Awards aired from the Microsoft Theater in Hollywood, and it was an unforgettable night! Honoring the best-selling artists from multiple continents and music genres, the AMAs provided magical performances and a few surprise wins. Let’s look at the highlights from the award show!

Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez kicked off the night with an amazing stripped back performance of her hit “Waiting For Tonight.” It was possibly the best vocal she has ever delivered at an award show, but then she proved she’s an excellent performer too by dancing to the best R&B, country, rap and pop songs from 2015. Although her opening performance and scandalous outfits throughout the evening were entertaining,  it was a tad weird having Lopez as a host too. The idea of having a host introduce a presenter to then give out an award seems a little unnecessary.

Nicki Minaj

Oh, Ms. Minaj. The rap superstar won Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Album and Favorite Rap/Hip-Hop Artist. However, aside from her brief smiles during her acceptance speeches, Minaj constantly looked upset whenever the camera panned to her. There were a few judgmental glares thrown and there as well as a couple of hilarious side eyes. What’s going on, Nicki?

Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez graced the stage to perform “Same Old Love” for the first time on an awards show, and it was her best performance to date. While sporting a sparkly, sexy outfit, Gomez delivered a pretty strong vocal performance and great choreography. Most of the “dance” moves involved her strutting the stage, but it was flawless regardless!

Demi Lovato

The “Confident” songstress sang her new single with Broadway inspired hair and clothes. She was clearly singing live, which I loved, and the power in her voice was incredible! One performance certainly was not enough. So, Lovato performed again with Alanis Morissette to sing the ‘90s hit “You Outta Know.” Lovato and Morissette sounded great, but they seemed a little bored as they walked around the stage belting the lyrics.

Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth

One of the biggest breakout stars of 2015, Meghan Trainor sang a stripped down version of her song “Like I’m Gonna Lose You.” Then, she transitioned to sing “Marvin Gaye” with fellow music newcomer Charlie Puth. Honestly, these two artists were not having the best night vocally. But the ending to the song made up for it! Trainor and Puth were overcome with emotion and just started making out on stage. Even Luke Bryan (Favorite Country Male Artist winner) had to comment on the shocking kiss.

Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande switched things up for this performance, and we are not just talking about her hair. She performed her new single “Focus” for the first time and showed off her personality by adding some comical talking bits in between the lyrics. It was a great performance in terms of production, but the songs still needs to grow on me. She later won the award for Favorite Pop/Rock Female and gave a funny impression of her grandmother.

Nick Jonas

Brother Joe Jonas, along with his DNCE band members, introduced Nick Jonas to the AMA stage. Nick proved his versatility by beginning with a slow version of “Chains” on the piano. Then he danced to “Levels,” demonstrated his drumming skills and brought out a choir to sing a gospel version of “Jealous.” He always has so much energy during his performance and his vocals never disappoint!

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

Taylor Lautner emerged from what seemed like out of nowhere to introduce Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with Terry Crews. Macklemore debuted a new song with singer Leon Bridges called “Kevin.” The lyrics focused on prescription drug usage and Macklemore rapped with so much passion. It might be one of his most personal songs ever, and it makes me excited for his new album.

Céline Dion

After Jared Leto introduced her in a moving speech, Céline Dion gave a powerful performance dedicated to the victims in Paris and abroad. Most of the audience was in tears as Dion elegantly sang in honor of those who have lost their lives. It was the most beautiful moment of the night.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber closed the night with a medley of three of his most recent hits. He started with a simple version of “What Do You Mean?” Then he danced in his baggy clothes and ripped jeans to “Where Are Ü Now?” Finally, he released the rain to sing “Sorry.” It was clear Bieber was lip-syncing in the rain, but I don’t think his fans cared.

One Direction

The four stylish and talented men won Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group and the most coveted award of the night: Artist of the Year. Their group hugs were adorable, but their performance of “Perfect” was even better. All of members sang their parts perfectly (punny!), but we wish they added more production and excitement their performances.

Most Random Moment

Throughout the night, ads were shown to advertise Rihanna’s upcoming album “Anti.” Rihanna is promoting her new music through videos as a part of her “Anti Diary.” She looked absolutely gorgeous in the promos, but the clips were very odd. Some of them were so scary that they resembled a trailer for a horror movie.

Highlight of the Night

Award shows cannot be complete without Rebel Wilson’s reactions. From her dancing to her facial expressions, she almost stole the show!
