Long Island is an island approximately 118 miles long and 23 miles wide that holds the special title of longest island in the continental United States. It truly is like no other island you will find and not only because of the horrible accents. If you grew up on Long Island here are some things you know are true:

1.     You’ve been apple picking or pumpkin picking out east. Everyone has done it and waited for three hours just to park so you can pick your overpriced pumpkin and eat some overpriced apple cider donuts at the end. This tradition is great for those who aren’t stuck in the traffic that comes with these lovely fall weekends.

2.     You have visited the Montauk lighthouse. You have driven the seemingly interminable drive just to see a black and white lighthouse and take a picture or two.

3.     You have probably been to freedom fest, a day when you can put on your American flag shirt, ripped short shorts, drink beer, and listen to country music. I have never seen the appeal myself but I also can’t stand concerts so maybe that has something to do with it.

4.     You have been to Splish Splash. It’s really the only water park Long Island has going for it. The water probably has diseases in it and the lines are always way too long but it’s kinda like a rite of passage to go once a summer.

5.     Pretty much every Christmas break you found yourself in the city doing the touristy stuff. I can’t tell you how many times I said I was done fighting the crowds at Rockefeller Center only to find myself back the next year saying the exact same thing.

6.     Lacrosse was beat down your throat as the golden sport. If you didn’t play, you knew ten kids who did – and out of them, five play for a college team.

7.     You go to Fire Island at least once a summer. You take the little ferry over and walk to the beach and then backtrack at the end of the day. If you close your eyes and block out all the Long Island accents around you, you can imagine yourself somewhere far more glamourous.

8.     You had your favorite shopping center that had every single store you could ever need in it. I swear there is a shopping center near me that has a Starbucks, a nail place, a pizza place, a bagel place, a bank, a Stop and Shop, and a Chinese food place. If that is not Long Island, I don’t know what is.

9.     You listened to 106.1 BLI or Walk 97.5 your whole life growing up and wondered how there were no better radio stations. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that Dr. James Romanelli and Dr. Steven T. Greenberg could melt my fat and give me a new face.

10.  You forever have the accent. My friends still make fun of me for how I say things. I guess it’s true that you can take the girl out of Long Island but you can’t take Long Island out of the girl.
