As young women living in 2018, it is almost impossible not to look at our bodies and see what we would like to change if we could. Body image is one of those subjects that gets talked about on social media, but in a general way. In other words, so many of us can point out others who have body image issues, but we have a hard time admitting that we ourselves also struggle. I consider myself to be one of those people.

It’s hard. We wake up every day, check our phones and see so many posts from Instagram models or friends posting their bikini pics or their latest strength circuit at the gym. Comparing yourself to others is all but impossible to avoid in our day and age. The bottom line is: there is so much more to life than what we physically look like.

If you are struggling with body image or have an unhealthy relationship with food, here is my advice to you:

Stop following people on Instagram that make you feel like you aren’t enough. Go through your social media and unfollow Kylie Jenner if seeing pictures of her makes you feel like less than you are worth (nothing against Kylie Jenner; she is just an example of Instagram models and celebrities that I know at least a quarter of my friends follow).

It’s pretty much a known fact that telling someone you think they’re beautiful when they quite obviously don’t believe it doesn’t help, but just remember to be there for your friends that struggle with body image because someday they might really need you to tell them they are beautiful.

Remember that you also have to take care of yourself before you can take care of others. Self-love is the best kind of love and you can’t help anyone else before you help yourself.
