The Pretty Little Liars “A” Theories

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Every Tuesday at 8pm I am glued to my TV and shamelessly spend the hour shrieking and covering my eyes. Most of you collegiettes know exactly what I’m talking about – Pretty Little Liars.

If this show doesn’t mess with your brain and leave you totally confused, I don’t know what will. Every week there are more and more exposures that hint at who A could actually be, and I’ve composed a list of possible theories to help you keep your A knowledge intact.

First off is the theory that each letter in A-Team represents a person who is, well, on the A-Team:
A– Alison
T– Toby
E– Ezra
A– Aria
M– Mona

Obviously Toby and Mona are a given at this point, but the other three are some serious food for thought…

The Aria Theory:
– Aria is the only one that says “shhh” in the opening credits, and in one of the show’s ads, she’s shown with shackles around her ankles.
– In the episode “unmAsked” in season 2, the writers/producers said that A would be dressed up as the black swan. Spencer’s sister Melissa was the one most obviously dressed as the black swan, but Aria’s dress strikingly resembles the colors of a poster for the Black Swan movie.
– In that same “unmAsked” episode, Aria is the only one who actually has her mask removed.
– In A’s lair, the girls find dolls of themselves and they are all dressed normally, except for Aria’s doll who is wearing a black hoodie, as A usually is.
– In season 2, Mona calls Aria “big A” in the school hallway and Aria looks shocked and quickly looks around to see who heard Mona call her that.

The Ezra Theory:
Don’t hate me for this. I love Ezra as much as the next girl, and I don’t want to believe he has anything to do with being A but…
– During the last Halloween episode, Ezra claimed he couldn’t go with Aria on the train ride, but suddenly appears at the end after Garrett has been murdered and Aria was discovered in a box.
– He claims he never knew Ali, but attended her funeral (weird).
– He showed up at Rosewood right after Ali’s death.
– A sometimes writes letters using a typewriter, and Ezra is the only one who has one.
– When he was apparently in New York (or wherever he actually went) the girls stopped receiving texts from A.

The Alison/Twin Theory:
– When Ali visits Hanna in a dream, she tells a story about two twin girls who are fighting over a doll, and one sister murders the other. In the Halloween episode, the same girl from that flashback is the creepy one who shows up at Hanna’s house and talks to her mom.
– One of the shows writers, Marlene King, has tweeted a few pictures of the twins from the movie “The Shining” and has hinted that twins have something to do with A.
– CeCe Drake, who randomly appears and introduces herself as Ali’s friend, reminds the girls of Alison and are creeped out by how similar they are. Alison’s claimed twin is supposedly named Courtney, who has the same initials as CeCe; CD.

These theories are all over the internet and there are tons of Tumblr accounts that explain each one in depth. Also, make sure to follow Marlene King on twitter (@imarleneking) because she frequently tweets subtle hints as to who A is!

Until we find out who the A-Team actually is, keep looking out for hints in the episodes and let us know in the comments below if you have any of your own A theories!
