Ideas for 2018 Resolutions

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

The fact that 2018 just arrived means it’s time to create New Year’s Resolutions! It’s sometimes hard to decide whether New Year’s resolutions are worth it or not since we all face the struggle of being really great about our resolutions for the first two weeks and then falling off track. Although a lot of people deviate from their goals, I do think that New Year’s Resolutions are nice. They’re a way to acknowledge the start of something new and fresh. If you really want to keep up with your goal, or at least keep it up for longer than the first two weeks of January, I suggest you WRITE YOUR GOALS DOWN. Stick them on a wall that you look at every day.

And if you’re looking for ideas on how to start your year right, here are some possible New Year’s Resolutions (ya know, other than the good old “go to the gym”)!

1. Read a little bit every day.

Even if you’re not big reader, try to get a book that you might enjoy reading from the library; whether it’s non-fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, or romance, there will be something that interests you. Reading will make you take a break from social media and help you feel calmer and smarter.

2. Travel in some capacity with friends or family.

While you’re in college, you want to have some memorable experiences. Why not plan a trip with your friends for spring break or before your next co-op starts? Whether it’s planning to go to Cancun for spring break or just New York for a long weekend, traveling with friends is a priceless and very memorable experience that will only strengthen your relationship! Plus, even if it’s an old place, you’ll see it in a different light! Even if you don’t go anywhere by the end of the year, traveling could (and should) still be on your college bucket list.

3. Keep a journal.

Keeping a journal allows you to be more observant and reflective about your life. That’s never a bad thing! We need to reflect in order to understand ourselves, take advantage of our strengths, and find areas to grow. I suggest maybe even starting a bullet journal, which I’ve started this year (look it up if you don’t know what it is – they’re really cool!)

4. Go outside more.

It is January in New England and it might be a bit nippy outside, but it’s important to get some fresh air. Take advantage of snow days and make a snowman or a snow fort! It will clear your head and make you feel good. Maybe combine this goal with the “exercise more” classic and take a run outside, especially when it starts getting warmer!

5. Spend time with your friends (and family!) when you can.

Remember that college won’t last forever. Spend every moment with the people that you care about while you can! Make memories; do something spontaneous, go to concerts, have late night conversations, and enjoy the present.

Don’t tell yourself that you can’t accomplish your goals. Take charge of them and put your mind to it! You got this. Good luck this year :)
