October 5th was the sixteenth anniversary of the beloved show Gilmore Girls. With the revival of the show just around the corner, People reported that Netflix would convert over 200 coffee shops around the US into a place that we all know and love –  Luke’s Diner. These replicas included the infamous Luke’s Diner sign, Luke’s diner aprons, flannels, hats, and most importantly lots and lots of coffee!

Free coffee was given during the first few opening hours of the coffee shops, so those lucky customers felt like they were given the Gilmore girl treatment. Not only was the event in celebration of the show’s anniversary, but it also served as a promotional event for the upcoming Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.

These pop up shops caused quite the frenzy with fans of all ages lining up for hours and down blocks just to experience and photograph this one time special occasion. Any Gilmore Girls fan would know that cell phones are strictly prohibited in the diner, and the coffee shops had the diner’s sign on display; however, cardboard cutouts of Luke, played by Scott Patterson, holding up an updated 21st century millennial sign were featured as well.

Prohibiting cell phones all together would be downright cruel, especially when pictures from Luke’s diner on your snap story and instagram would be iconic. Prohibiting basic trends, such as man buns and posting snaps of your food, are more relevant and feasible terms to live by. As if the cardboard cutouts were not enough for our fangirl hearts, Variety reported that Scott Patterson, aka Luke Danes himself, decided to show up at Comoncy Cafe in Beverly Hills to surprise some very lucky fans.

Sporting his favorite flannel and a baseball cap, Patterson was in his Luke Danes element, and even helped out with serving the coffee. Last but certainly not least, the coffee cups in these Luke’s Diner pop up shops were specially designed with classic Lorelai coffee quotes.

Being an avid coffee drinker myself, I feel like I can relate with Lorelai on a spiritual level. All in all, Luke’s Coffee Day seemed to be a success for Gilmore Girls fans nationwide. Whether you actually got to participate in the event or just enviously follow along on social media, it was a refreshing and pleasant surprise to see one of our favorite diners come to life. It was also a great way to tide us over until the revival premieres on November 25th on Netflix. Along with the event, Netflix released a short featurette in anticipation for the revival, which featured the cast of the show as they reminisce on their favorite memories and short snippets of what is to come. You can watch the featurette here.

With that being said, there is a little over a month left to rewatch the seven seasons of Gilmore Girls, so grab your coffee and get bingeing!
