5 Must Read Books About Mental Health

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Sometimes when we talk about mental health, it’s hard to fully capture exactly what it means in a concise and understandable explanation. But from brutally honest to shockingly hilarious, these books get it.

1. All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

This heart-wrenching story unapologetically addresses depression and suicide while beautifully intertwining young love and self discovery.

2. The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick

Yes, there’s a book, and while it may not include Jennifer Lawrence’s academy award winning acting, it’s still worth the read.

3. A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara

This is one of those books you simple can’t shake. The characters haunt your thoughts as you are a helpless bystander while they struggle to overcome PTSD, self-harm, depression, and the rest of the trials life presents them.

4. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

The endearing story of Christopher John Francis Boone opens you up to the life of a boy with autism, providing an entirely new perspective on how to view the world.

5. Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson

Lyrically written, Wintergirls exposes the raw, unglamorous vortex of anorexia and the painful path to recovery.
