Yuka Hatada- Exchange Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NMSU chapter.

Name: Yuka Hatada

Age: 21

Major: English

Home city/country: Ritto, Japan

Why did you choose NMSU? Because the university is really big and I could take HRTM classes. Also the people who prevously came here for their exchange said the campus was very safe.

How long are you here for? 1 year

What differences have you noticed between Japan and the U.S.? I have noticed that the people are nice and friendly. During class I have to make comments and there is more participation than in Japan and I also think that the teacher’s have good classes because in Japan the teachers can be more traditional in their way of teaching.

What places have you visited? I have been to Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Nevada.

What are some places you’d like to visit? I would like to go to Florida, California, New York and Hawaii.

K-pop or J-pop? J-pop

Before coming did you have any stereotypes about the U.S.? I had the idea that people were either very fat or skinny, that everyone owned a gun, that students are very dedicated to their classes and that people would have a discriminatory attitude towards Asian people.

Student at NMSU, Im an anthropology major. Learning about different cultures, immersing in their traditions and learning new languages fascinates me. Im a food enthusiast, I love to travel and have an intense passion for corgis.
