Student Run Black Businesses

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

Our black community would be so much stronger socially and economically if we supported our own. What better way to support your fellow Aggies than by purchasing their goods and services? We have so much talent from clothing lines and photography businesses to beauty products made in their own Aggie kitchen.. A huge AGGIE PRIDE! to these ladies and gentlemen for following their dreams TODAY to build a better tomorrow!

1. The Polar Movement- Sire

“What inspired you and your co-founders?”

Our brand’s purpose is to teach the youth and help them gain awareness about the systemic issues they face through our clothing and other platforms. In order for us to complete this task, we challenge ourselves to stay aware of social issues to make sure the products we put out touches the people in the streets.

“What is a motto/mantra you live by?”

Engineered with optimism on the foundation to maintain a Positive Outlook About Reality, The POLAR Movement is the perfect environment for visions to be transformed into real life.

2. Natural Blvssom- Victoria Harris

“What inspired you to create Natural Blvssom?”

Over the past couple years I’ve worked with a lot of business owners and entrepreneurs. I’ve seen how they started their businesses and it gave me the inspiration to start my own. It’s a great feeling working for yourself. Knowing that I’ve worked so hard to get to where I am today is even more amazing. My supporters are my motivation to push me to keep going.

“Where do you see your business in 5 years?”

I can see myself with a full skin care product line in 5 years. Selling various fragrances, Crémes and scrubs and even coming out with more products beyond that.

3. No Knot Photography – Denzel Washington

“What inspired you to create No Knot Photography?”

What inspired me to start my business was how I went through my life with only a few pictures to document my existence. I don’t want people to look back on their life and have nothing to show for it (especially a picture). When I’m out in the field I’m not just taking pictures but capturing someone’s existence. It’s a statement to say I was here and this is who I was.

“What is a motto/mantra you live by?”

“If you don’t work, you don’t eat” – 2 Thessalonians 3:10

4. Curly Productions- Alexis Jones

“What inspired you to create Curly Productions?”

This inspiration came from my love for photography and design. The vision I have for my company is each curl has a different, yet beautiful shape. Much like a curl, every production is uniquely beautiful in its own way. Capturing the sentiment of a moment through a picture, video, or design element should be just as unique and beautiful as a curl.

“Where do you see your business in 5 years?”

In 5 years I see my company growing having an actual location and multiple photographers and designers.

5. Emboss Cosmetics- Ashley Jones

“What inspired you to create Emboss Cosmetics?”

My inspiration for this company is the strength behind black women, and the beauty that is already apparent and deliberate. With that being said, my cosmetics focus on enhancing and illuminating instead of covering up and creating illusions.

“What is a motto/mantra you live by?”

“Hightlight your life. you should enhance the qualities and attributes of your life in the best way possible.”

6. Pish Posh- Emani Harris

“What inspired you to create Pish Posh?”

I started the business after my best friend encouraged me to do it, she even gave me the name for the brand. I’ve always been an artist and loved fashion and have been painting on clothes since high school, but I’ve been an artist since the first grade. I love what I do because it’s a different avenue for fashion as far as incorporating art.

“Where do you see your business in 5 years?”

I hope to get a store one and continue on growing the brand.  In five years I hope to be designing for all types of celebrities with my custom pieces.

7. Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant- Kassia McKain

“What inspired you to become a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant?”

I have two inspirations on why I am a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant. The first one is to see women smile and to allow them to recognize that taking care of her skin is highly important. Because we have our skin forever we necessarily don’t have makeup forever, but we have our faces. And to also empower them at the same time! What other job allows you to do that!? My second inspiration is to be financially free and to have my own company in the future, and with Mary Kay being my platform, it’ll help me see my dream become a reality.

“What is a motto/mantra you live by?”

“Don’t ever quit!”

Delanee-Alexis Coley is a 19 year old Multimedia Journalism student at the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Ms. Coley is multifaceted and finds interest in anything from the arts to social justice. As someone who can be very timid, she is learning to take an active approach to follow her dreams, even if that means pushing out of her comfort zone. In deep thought Delanee-Alexis was inspired to join more organizations on campus and in her community, living up to her new mantra “Never be passive in your pursuit.”- Delanee-Alexis Coley. Locally, Coley has served as an executive board member of Charm City Aggies (Baltimore's hometown group), a mentor and dream enthusiast with Just Bee Empowerment Group, an active member of Alpha Lambda Delta Collegiate Honor Society, and many more. Back at home, Delanee-Alexis is the youth president of a nonprofit called Pure Potential Enterprises (founded in Baltimore, 2012) in which she helps youth organize collegiate portfolios, package scholarships, achieve collegiate acceptances, and compete for collegiate scholarships. Her favorite bible verse, Proverbs 31:25, is the epitome of how she feels about life. Though she has faced many up's and down's she is always confident that God will lead her where she is destined to be. It reads "She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future."
Hi everyone! I am a sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University who should be majoring in Weddings, but is actually a Journalism & Mass Communications student with a concentration in Multimedia. Originally I am from Woodbridge, Virginia, which is about 30 minutes south of our nation’s capital. I have lived here all my life, but I’m not afraid to branch out and explore the world. This past summer I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia to engage and immerse myself in Australian culture. The experience was phenomenal and I’m already counting down the days until I can return that beautiful country. Check out my Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.
