Chronicles of the Lazy Natural

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

Being natural hair can be a beautiful struggle. Why, you ask? Because despite the joys of having gorgeous curls, there are bad habits that tend to hinder the prosperity of being a well-rounded naturalista. This is what we call the “Lazy Natural.” The naturalista who loves the idea of being natural and is constantly receiving compliments for her kinky hair, but does not have the patience nor skill to maintain her hair.

As a lazy natural you are no stranger to failing at twist outs, braid outs, flexi rod sets, etc. You have watched countless of Youtube videos trying to master the skill of a bomb natural do. When things go left in the process of any twist out, your first resort is spritzing, (or in some cases drenching), your hair in water and rocking a Wash and Go or topping it off with an afro puff.

One of the most dreadful things about being natural is of course detangling your curls during, and after, your hair wash routine.  Any naturalista can testify that this process is considerably pure torture. Detangling our coils can range from an exhausting ten to forty-five minutes. Due to this tiring process, the lazy natural is prone to rushing or skipping the process of detangling, leaving their hair in a matted hot mess.

When it comes to maintaining natural hair, there are plethora of methods that are available to every natural woman. From the hair products that are used to revive your curls to the overnight sleeping tricks such as the Pineapple method to maintain a desired curl pattern. While the options are endless in terms of obtaining healthy and appealing curls, the lazy natural tends to take the easy way out. These naturals typically apply an unknowingly excessive amount of hair product, such as Shea Moisture Hair Smoothie and/or sleep throughout the night without any form of protective overnight hair method to restore their curls in the morning. The reason being is that this aspect of being natural is time consuming.

Despite the flaws of the lazy natural, they cherish their curls in a different form. Their hair is just as magical and beautiful as the naturals who are professionals in all aspects of being a naturalista.
