6 Ways to Avoid Over Thinking

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCAT chapter.

Overthinking will typically leave you stressed out and overwhelmed. Let’s be honest, who really needs that in their life? No one.

The process of overthinking does nothing but make situations harder than what they generally are. Try accepting the past, preparing for your future, and realizing that everything in life is not under your control.

People tend to reflect so much on what they did wrong or even what they could’ve done differently, not realizing how much time is being wasted by doing so.

Overthinking will have one limiting themselves without even knowing. From experience, you will eventually find flaws in everything if you continue to overthink it.  Everything and everyone has flaws, so take a chance on life and live.

Do not get me wrong, it is always good to reflect; it is also good to take action in the process.

Here are some ways to make life much easier for you:

1. AVOID Over Thinkers.

Have you ever been in a situation where you play something out in your head of how you want it to go and then it goes completely the opposite? Have you been crushed by that one person who brings up with the most ridiculous outcomes? The overthinker. Yes, that is what they are called. They tend to bring great ideas, but when you are actually interested, they decide to remind you of where you are in life or ask, “Are you really sure you want to go through with this?”

At that moment, you respond with a definite yes and then when you’re finally alone thinking you tend to ask yourself that question again. DON’T.

2. Live With No Limits

Life with no limits is a happy life. If you continue to make excuses for yourself, you will find yourself missing out on an awful lot. Have you ever made plans to do something extravagant, but because you thought of all possible outcomes of the transition, you limited yourself? I’m sure you have.

If they can do it, you can do it. It is all about taking action and following through with it. Do not let one or two delays in your shift keep you from where you truly want to be.

3. Have Patience

Things takes time, so have patience. Just because you were not given a call back or text right away does not always mean you did something wrong. People have things going on in life that reduces how quickly they respond to your text or email.

4. Exercise Your Thoughts

Take your thoughts to the gym. Tension often times come with overthinking and that’s never a good thing. If you find yourself overwhelmed or unsure, I can guarantee an evening at the gym will make things extremely easier for you.

Exercising opens the mind to new ideas and certainty of present ones. It will allow the mind to think positively about all goals you may have set for yourself. You will definitely leave the gym optimistic.

5. Direct Your Attention to Something Inspiring

You can never go wrong with directing your attention to something positive. This will allow you to be motivated and confident in your life choices. It will also remove all negativity that may have reoccurred in your life. Leave the past in the past and focus on your future.

Reading a book from a favorite author, listening to inspirational music, watching your favorite movie, going out for the night. Just use these sources to recollect your thoughts.

Don’t fear failure, compete with it. Prove yourself wrong and dominate your limits.

6. Gain from Here

Just think of it this way: whatever choice you make in life can only impact you or have no effect at all. If you decide to do something, it will open doors for experience whether it does or does not prosper. At the end of the day, life is all about trial and error. Continue to create a better you and make those positive moves that you have been craving so badly to do. Gain from the experience, only then will you know how to approach it later in life.

I am a Journalism student at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. I enjoy the thought of expressing oneself positively through creativity.
Hi everyone! I am a sophomore at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University who should be majoring in Weddings, but is actually a Journalism & Mass Communications student with a concentration in Multimedia. Originally I am from Woodbridge, Virginia, which is about 30 minutes south of our nation’s capital. I have lived here all my life, but I’m not afraid to branch out and explore the world. This past summer I studied abroad in Sydney, Australia to engage and immerse myself in Australian culture. The experience was phenomenal and I’m already counting down the days until I can return that beautiful country. Check out my Tumblr, Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook.
