This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mville chapter.

Shanice Peters is a rather busy Senior, being a part of the 2017 Vagina Monologues, Campus Coordinator and President of Manhattanville’s Her Campus chapter, a member of the Manhattanville Dance Ensemble, VP of Student Affairs, member of MVL Radio, working as a mentor, an eTern, and a tour guide, and a marketing intern for the 7Sisters Live at Mville, among other activities.  Shanice is an English major with a concentration in creative writing with a Marketing and Communications major. Being a senior has been tough on her, “It honestly doesn’t feel real at all. It hasn’t really hit me yet even though I’ve already received emails about cap and gown, senior week, etc. I am very excited to complete this chapter of my life and to see what’s next.”  But before we focus on the future, we should take a look at Shanice’s career at Manhattanville.

Shanice founded the Manhattanville Chapter of Her Campus during the Spring Semester of 2015, the end of her Sophomore year. Shanice came across Her Campus at the end of high school, she happened to be reading an article about going to college, and continued to visit as she started her college journey. Then it hit her, “When I first came to Manhattanville, we didn’t really have a publication that was online and digital. There wasn’t a publication that let students write what they want and on a platform as big as Her Campus. Plus, the benefits of being a part of Her Campus are endless from internships to being able to attend high profiled events with notable people. I saw Her Campus as a chance for students to gain experience, but in a fun way by working with fellow students. I also love how empowering it is for women.” Besides Her Campus, Shanice leads a busy, productive, and inspiring day to day life, keeping herself busy, but many of us over in HC look up to Shanice for her always positive attitude, and her success, but success doesn’t come without the help of others. “My favorite professor has to be the late Andrew Bodenrader. Professor Bodenrader was my First Year Writing professor and I genuinely enjoyed his class. He gave me a lot of advice on my writing and he was the one who encouraged me to decide on my major. He was also extremely supportive of me starting the Her Campus chapter. It’s hard knowing he’s passed and I never got to thank him, but he still holds a special place in my heart as an educator who has made an impact on my life.”

Shanice is a pretty busy girl, “I’ve always kept myself busy and I think 95% percent of the time people never believe how busy I am!” But she has advice on how to keep sane, while doing everything you can.  “Remember to focus on you first. I think we often forget, especially in college, to focus on ourselves and to make sure we can be the best we can be in order to succeed and get that degree. Take the time to treat yourself and to also expose yourself to as much learning opportunities as possible. These four years are the chance for you to have easy access to these opportunities and don’t let anything get in the way.”

Despite the endless days, Shanice is going to miss her days at Manhattanville. “I’m going to miss just being a part of the community. I’ll never have an experience like this ever again where I’m living on a campus, seeing my friends everyday and just having the most amazing memories/opportunities. I’ll also miss being involved. Once I’m in the real world, I can’t get involved as easily as I’ve been able to at Mville.”

If you see Shanice on campus and want to spark up a conversation with her, here are some fun conversation starters!

Favorite TV Show? Gossip Girl! Favorite Book? I don’t have a favorite book, but I have a favorite short story. Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? By Joyce Carol Oates Favorite Place to Go On a Day Trip? Just a day in NYC is great. Although I’ve lived in Brooklyn my entire life and have traveled into Manhattan a million times, I like to still go into the city and try a new restaurant or walk around and see new things. I just like being curious and adventurous.
