My Closest Friends Are My Family

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Muhlenberg chapter.

“The only people that will always be there for you, no matter what, are family.”

This is something my mom told me from a very young age.

Growing up with this mentality, I was always selective about who I was making friends with. While most young kids made friends with people who liked to play the same games or liked the same band, I made friends based on people I knew I could trust. As I grew up, I learned that people come and go. I believe that everyone enters your life for a reason. But I also believe that people leave your life for very important reasons too. Not everyone is meant to stick around for awhile, but that’s part of growing up. It’s all about deciding who you want to make time for and who will, equally, make time for you.

Throughout high school, I was taught my mother’s lesson the hard way. It is true that the only people that are always there for me are my family. I became extraordinarily close with every member of my family and valued every experience we shared with one another. I think the special thing about being best friends with your family members is they will support you no matter what. Life has it’s ups and downs, but family sticks around for all of that.

I’ve been very fortunate in my life. My parents raised me and my twin brother to be close with our family members. My mom taught me when I was young to only trust the family. While this was a lot as a young kid to keep in mind, I will forever cherish this advice she gave me. Admittedly so, the advice I carry with me makes me careful who I spend my time with. However, it has shaped me into who I am today. Because of my mom, I am a good judge of character. I know who I am, and I know what kind of people compliment me as an individual. I’ve learned that there is a different levels of trust between me and my family and me and my friends.

Life is a game of trust. Sometimes you open up too much and that’s okay. Trusting people isn’t a bad thing, but it’s always good to be slightly cautious. Not every friend you have needs to know every last detail about you. Remember who you’re closest to and know that they are the only people that will always be there for you.

For me, the closest people in my life is my family. Keep the people you love the most close and believe that through, thick and thin, they will stick around.
