A College Student’s Guide to Summer Closet Clean-Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Muhlenberg chapter.

Ready for summer and excited to don fashionable, cute clothing? Need to organize your closet to make room for all the cute bathing suits, tops, and shorts? We all know that when it comes to cleaning out your closet, procrastination is all too common and is unpleasant when you get around to doing it. When I come home from college, all I’ll want to do is sleep, relax and de-stress from finals. Unfortunately, before I can do that, I must confront the nightmare of cleaning and unpacking everything I bring home. This step-by-step guide is sure to make the organization process a lot easier:

Divide and Conquer

Dividing your clothes up by season is a great way to organize clothes. This can be as simple as separating them into different piles. This makes the process far more efficient.

Keep, Toss, and TBD

I always have a hard time deciding which clothes to keep and which to throw away. Therefore, creating three separate piles to keep, toss, or figure out what to do with later simplifies the activity.

Bye-Bye Winter Clothes

There are a variety of different ways to store your winter clothes. You can either put them in a box to store in the basement or attic. If you are not living at home and do not want to carry your clothes back and forth, you could rent a storage unit.

Clean Your Clothes

Make sure you clean your winter clothes before you put them away for the next year. If you don’t follow this advice, dirt and stains can set, which will leave you unhappy when you retrieve them again in the fall. Additionally, remember to place your clothes in a dark, dry area, as humidity can damage clothes.

Bring on Summer!

Once you have dealt with putting away your winter clothes, you can easily place your summer clothing in the front of your closet or on the lower shelves, making it easily accessible.

Following these simple steps will result in an easier, swifter cleaning process and provide you with an organized closet. Happy summer cleaning!
