What Makes Clothing Sustainable? Learning About Green Clothing.

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

Buying clothing has become considerably hard in the past few years with the clothing material innovations that the eco-friendly industry has invented to preserve our environment. It’s not just about reading the tag to find the size anymore. I am here to help you understand what makes a product sustainable and how to look amazing doing it.

First thing’s first: here are some of the qualifications, including materials, dyes, production, and trade:

  • The use of natural dyes (not only for toys and teething products but the fabrics you put on your body!)
  • The use of eco-fabrics (such as bamboo (which is my personal favorite), tencel, organic wool, organic cotton, soy, recycled fabrics or modal)
  • The exclusion of all animal products
  • Fair trade certified commercewhich focuses exports from developing countries into developed countries, for example, it is made in the US or Europe? Did the company outsource their production disregarding the standards for international labor?
  • And products made from renewable resources.

Contrary to popular belief, not all eco-friendly clothing is hideous or uber-bohemian. As the industry grows, companies are expanding their horizons and more designers are emerging in the sustainable clothing industry. I do realize that many lines are expensive, BUT it’s simple supply and demand ladies. The higher the demand for sustainable clothing, the bigger the industry becomes and more competing firms means lower price!

Sometimes it’s hard to meet all of these requirements when buying clothing. As long as you’re aware of what to look for on the tag, you will make conscious decisions to benefit our environment, you can feel good about your spent money, and look good doing it!

Look for my upcoming articles explaining Eco-Fabrics and new up and coming clothing lines!!
