This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

Name: Emma Grotto

Class: 2019

Major: Physics, Comp. Sci

Pronouns: She/her

What are your majors and why did you chose them?

Physics and computer science. I have always been interested in physics, when I was a child my dream was to become an astronaut. Since then my interests have changed a little. Robots, Ai and green energy became very important for me. I feel that my 2 majors encompass all of my past and current interests.

What is your favourite animal?

Cats, giraffes, ferrets, chameleons, parrots, otters… I don’t know I can’t choose!

Would you prefer reading books or watching movies?

Books, it is always fascinating to see how far books can push my creativity to visualize the scenes and characters. I love losing track of time whilst reading. Movies rarely have the ability to do that.

What does your ideal Saturday look like?

Going to a café with a friend. Chatting with my parents on skype. I love the autumn leaves, so going for a walk around the lakes to appreciate the gorgeous nature we have here in western Mass. I prefer going to bed knowing that I have gotten work done so I’d have to complete some assignments.

What are some studying habits you have? Both positive and negative.

Some positive ones: I keep myself as calm as possible (stressing never helps), listen to soundtracks or Avicii because I find him inspiring, and I change my location every hour or s and it helps me clear out my mind so that I don’t become bored. I usually move from my Room, to Kendade, to Thirsty Mind. Some negative ones:I always seem to start studying a bit late,And I sometimes forget to study everything because if a concept is too difficult I leave it to study last and then often forget about it.

Describe your dream house. Where it would be? What would it look like?

Very modern, simple with not much in it. It would only have basic furniture with some abstract or landscape artwork hanging on the walls. Probably would be open plan, I’d like to see the lounge from the kitchen. I’d like big windows, so that I never completely feel indoors. I would like a study area where i would keep a telescope and a mini library. It would be on a cliff by the ocean and hopefully with a large forest/jungle nearby I could do morning strolls through.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

Anything unhygienic. Probably specifically when people touch the floor and then touch something I own.

What do you love about yourself?

I am very carefree. I am not offended easily and take criticism very well. I appreciate that I am like this because it means I am good at improving myself when I need or want to, but also I think I am just in general happy and very focused on more important things.

If you had a time machine for one trip, would you go back in time or go into the future? Why? Where would you go to?

I would go back to when the pyramids were being built. I don’t believe how they are said to be made. And I’d like to see a pharaoh, I don’t think they were human. Also I think we (humans) were extremely intelligent then and it would be interesting to see the mathematics and astronomy they used.

If you were to impart one crucial thing you learned from being a first year unto another first year, what would it be?

Take classes you think you will love. Being stressed isn’t that bad when you are passionate what you are doing!
