Every year countless women (and men) promise that they will get fit and healthy.  They promise themselves that they will be able to fit into that skintight dress or that yellow polka dot bikini once the weather begins to heat up.  Some want to impress a guy or want to look like their favorite model that grace the covers of Elle or Vogue.  Why do we compare ourselves to others and only commit ourselves to getting thinner to impress others?  Our society puts so much pressure, particularly on women, to be thin.  Thin is apparently beautiful in their eyes but thin doesn’t necessarily mean healthy.  Here are 3 good reasons you should get fit and healthy.

1. YOUR health

Health is the greatest reason for losing weight or working out.  The United States have stigma with other countries for our over-sized people and the over-sized portions that we eat.  Everything in the U.S is bigger and it isn’t necessarily better.  Eating better and exercising a little more each day can help you get into the habit and you will soon see a change.  Yes, losing weight would help you if you are overweight or obese but if you are in the normal weight category, these little things can help your insides, even if you won’t see much of a difference on the outside.  Eating healthier and staying fit does wonders for your skin and hair, so think of them as an added plus that comes with being in a good place.

2. Confidence

Yes, losing weight can help you look great but being fit just brings an added boost of happiness and confidence to you.  If you feel good then it’s all the really matters.  If you are confident, you will carry yourself and look better to those around you.  Confidence is one of a girl’s best accessories! You don’t need to just look good, you need to feel good.  People tend to forget that you need to feel good in your own skin and do it for yourself.  Build yourself up to your own standards, not anyone else’s.

3. More Energy

Being a full-time student, having a part-time job or internship, juggling a social life with tests and group projects can really send you crashing well before the sun has gone down.  It’s probably because of your lifestyle and eating choices.  Eat better, get more energy.  Make time for a like speed-walking or jogging and it will boost your energy levels like crazy.  Ten minutes a day can get you in a great spot and you will be so happy with how you feel that you will want to push yourself to do more.  As a college student, energy is the one thing that we need an abundance of.

Don’t get healthy just to be thin and don’t let anyone pressure you into losing weight because “you would look so much cuter”.  We’ve all had doubts about our weight and appearance because of outside opinions.  No one’s opinion should be more valuable than your own.  A new you starts with you alone.
