Campus Cutie: Dalvin Josias Sejour

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

Name: Dalvin Josias Sejour

Age: 18

Year: Freshman

Major: Information Technology

Minor: Business

Gone are the days of the awkward and somewhat clueless first year college students. The freshmen are making waves at Montclair State University in several different ways. Many first year students are immediately taking on student leader positions, holding more than one job at a time and excelling tremendously while doing so. One of those extraordinary students is Dalvin Josias Sejour, who is no stranger to excelling above the norm in terms of his grades and campus involvement. We here at Her Campus Montclair put Dalvin in the hot seat, to take a break from the bone chilling weather outside, and took some time to get to know why he deserves to be the Campus Cutie of the week.

HCM: What is one thing you can’t live without?

DS: My music. I like rap music in particular and I just seem can’t seem to go a day without listening to it. Contrary to popular belief, there are a lot of different types of rap music. Some rap songs are inspirational while others are more motivational and upbeat which helps me get through a workout.

HCM: How involved are you in your campus community?

DS: I am involved on campus by working for Commuter Student Resources and Services, attending organization meetings and events such as the Brother Hood/Le Hermandad, OSAU [Organization of Students for African Unity], HSA [Haitian Student Association], and CSIT [Computer Science Information Technology] Club.  Depending on the results I receive in a few weeks I will hopefully be both a Summer Peer Leader for the Educational Opportunity Program and a Resident Assistant. I am a well-rounded individual, so my involvement on campus reflects that.

HCM: If you could go back in history, who would you like to meet?

DS: If I can go back in history, I would meet my biological parents. Unfortunately, before I even turned two years old my parents were stripped from my life due to a tragic home invasion. So I never got the chance to meet my them. I wish I could go back in time and meet them to get to know them. Although there are many people I would love to meet in the past, my parents are the most important individuals in my life that I have never gotten to meet.

HCM: Who is your biggest inspiration?

DS: My biggest inspirations are my parents [aunt and uncle]. They came as immigrants to the United States in 1976 and raised my siblings and I in our time of need. They instilled in me a lot of life lessons that have allowed me to become the man that I am today. If it were not for them in my life, I would probably be a misguided individual.

HCM: What do you think is more important to have in order to succeed, ambition or potential?

DS: To be successful, I believe ambition goes a long way because it is the drive that allows one to keep going. One can have potential but not be sure if they can keep going, while one who has ambition has a passion burning deep within them that pushes them to prevail.

HCM:We all have a purpose in life and most, if not all of us want to leave an impact on the world. So what would your footprints in the sand of life say to the future world?

DS: My footprints in the sands of life will say that I am headed in the right direction, but there is adversity to come. As I keep walking on the sand, there are going to be thorns and glass trying to harm me and prevent me from reaching my destiny of greatness. However, the ambition I talked about from earlier will allow me to persevere and attain greatness.

HCM: What’s something you wish everyone knew about you?

DS: One thing I wish everyone knew about me is that I am a cool individual. Although I have attained a certain level of success as a freshman, I am not the type to be boastful about my accomplishments, but rather be humble in all that I do.

HCM: If someone were to make a movie about your life, who would you hope would play you?

DS: If there was a movie about my life I would want Will Smith to play me. Will Smith is an amazing actor because he has two sides to him in many of the roles he plays. In Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Will Smith is an energetic and funny comedian who gets into a lot of adventures. While on the flipside, in the Pursuit of Happiness, the struggles of life overpowers his character and he must combat adversity at many avenues. Will Smith would be the perfect actor to play me in the movie of my life.

HCM: So what would you name the movie about your life?

DS: King of the Hill.

HCM: [Laughs] Nice! Now that all that deep stuff is out of the way, who is your ultimate celebrity crush or as us millennials call it, WCW [Woman Crush Wednesday]?

DS: Jhene Aiko because she makes thought provoking music about relationships just as Drake does. You can really feel her pain through the music she makes.
