Video Games and Food? Sounds Delicious!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Molloy chapter.

There has always been a relationship with technology and fast food, especially when it comes to video games. McDonald’s has a history of handing out small 8-bit video games in their Happy Meals that usually pertained to a fun well known video game or cartoon character such as Sonic The Hedgehog and Hello Kitty. Other restaurants such as Taco Bell have partnered with companies such as Bungie and Activision in order to give their customers a chance to win a free copy of the upcoming game, which is what Taco Bell did when Destiny first released. Other companies such as Mountain Dew have partnered with Activision to give their consumers a chance to win major upgrades in Call of Duty, by finding a winning code on the bottom of the cap. Some video chains sponsored their own video games, such as the well-meaning but creepy and unsettling game called Sneak King, created by Burger King. The restaurant Arby’s is known for their knowledge on the latest in video game and anime news, and usually uses them to promote their food by making the characters out of cardboard, french fries, or condiments. Examples are when they made the “Louts” symbol from the video game Warframe out of ketchup, Frieza and Goku from Dragon Ball Z fighting on cardboard, and the newest Pokémon starters Litten, Owlet, and Poplio from Pokémon Sun & Pokémon Moon out of ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. These kinds of unique advertisements and partnerships usually only happen in America, but now Australia has made their own video game/fast food deal with Dominos and Square Enix, for $49.95 people can get three traditional pizzas, 1 garlic bread, 1 1.25L drink and for gamers a copy of Final Fantasy XIV Complete Edition and the DLC A Realm Reborn, Heavensward and the expansion Stormblood, all downloadable for PS4 or Windows. Domino’s has even come up with unique new pizzas types such as the Moogles Meatlovers, the Heavensward Hawaiian, Curious Cactuar, Chocobo Chow and many more! Partnerships with video game companies have not only helped to boost the sales of the games but also of the food at the restaurants as well. Some critics argue that this new partnership will only contribute to the problem of obesity in Australia but gamers seem to be ignoring the criticisms and ordering out to get their hands on the game. Currently there is no end date for when the deal at Dominos will end, so if you live in Australia be sure to get all your copy of the game and the expansions at this cheap price while you can! Happy gaming!
