5 Netflix Originals You Should Binge Watch Immediately

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MNSU chapter.

1.   House of Cards

If you love politics, this is the one for you! Kevin Spacey stars as Frank Underwood, a politician working his way through the corrupt White House scene. This show gives a glimpse into the backstabbers and power houses that run the government. Frank Underwood is followed on his journey from House Majority Whip to eventually becoming President of the United States. The show has the perfect blend of politics and drama. And with supporting actors like Kate Mara as a reporter following the dark side of politics and Mahershala Ali as a lawyer and lobbyist, House of Cards surely will not disappoint. House of Cards has had 5 seasons so far and it has not been announced if it will be renewed for a 6th.

2.   Orange Is the New Black

Another show that you probably should’ve heard of by now is Orange Is the New Black. The show was one of the very first Netflix originals to premiere back in 2013. The show is based on Piper Kerman’s real-life memoir detailing her experience in a women’s prison. The show is centered around Piper, a woman who was sentenced after smuggling drug money with a former girlfriend. Piper is followed throughout her journey in prison as well as all of the people and other inmates she meets. If Netflix just isn’t your style, make sure to check out the book! The show’s 5th season premiered back in June and has been renewed through the 8th season. You’re sure to stay busy watching this one.

3.   Stranger Things

Let me start by saying, if you haven’t watched or at least HEARD of Stranger Things, you may live under a rock. I’m kidding. Over the past year, everyone has been talking about this sci-fi show. It follows three boys and their encounter with Eleven, a young girl with psychokinetic abilities. The three boys follow Eleven and find that there are secret paranormal experiments happening in their town. The show follows the adventure of finding out what the experiments are and how to get their friend Will back from the Upside Down.  Make sure to mark your calendar – the second season is set to be released on October 27th. Just in time for Halloween!

4.   Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has to be one of the most underrated Netflix originals. This show mixes comedy and a heartwarming story all into one. Kimmy Schmidt is the main character in the series. At the age of 15, she was kidnapped and kept secluded from the outside world. Fifteen years later, she was found and introduced to the modern world. The show follows Kimmy, her roommate Titus and the many others she meets while adjusting to the new world. The third season was released in May, and since then has been renewed for a fourth!

5.   Last Chance U

The only reality show on this list, but a definite must-watch. This show mixes college, sports and students trying to make a name for themselves as professional athletes. Last Chance U follows students from East Mississippi Community College that play for the school’s football team. These students attend the university with the hopes of playing for a Division 1 school or even being drafted straight into the NFL. With only two seasons, this may be a quick watch, but the show is sure to pull at the heartstrings. A third season is expected to be released sometime next summer, where it will follow students from Independent Community College in Kansas.
