Punk Spring Fashion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Monday, May 6’s Met Gala carried fall 2012’s punk inspiration into spring 2013. The fashion industry’s red carpet main event lets fashion gurus and celebrities celebrate fashion at what is considered to be New York City’s top social event of the year. Attendees gathered at the Metropolitan Museum, more commonly known as the Met, to mark the opening of the museum’s new fashion exhibit at its Costume Institute, a tradition that has existed since the Costume Institute opened at the Met in 1948.

Unlike those who attended the gala in designer and vintage punk-inspired garments, the punk trend is easy to reinterpret from fall to spring for a college student’s budget.

Leather: Just because the weather is warmer, doesn’t mean leather should be ruled out. Ditch the leather jackets from fall on sunny spring days, but embrace the tough material in the form of circle skirts, shorts or bustiers.

Bold Stripes: Thick, horizontal stripes echo what punk royalty wore back when the punk movement began in 1970s London.

Fishnet: Fishnet tights are a punk staple to be reinterpreted in a modern way for spring. Show off the fabric without being too overwhelming. Fishnet sleeves or a crop top are easy ways to accomplish this.

Studs: Pyramid studs can be found everywhere, from phone cases, to sneakers, to jewelry. Lucky for those of you wanting to channel your inner punk princess, studs can be slipped into an outfit on purses or shoes to be just accessories, or to be focal points of an outfit all over denim cut-offs or chambray tops.
