The Bachelorette 8: Off to Bermuda

Posted Jun 4 2012 - 10:19pm

The guys started off their week with a flight to Bermuda and a casual scooter ride along the island countryside.  Major bro-time bonding.

Doug was given the first one-on-one date.  When this was revealed, we heard from Alejandro for one of the first times.  He’s one of the only ones not to have had a one-on-one date and according to the TV editing, he has never spoken to Emily (when in reality, their conversation probably just didn’t make for good TV… this usually means he won’t be around too long).

Tensions got high before Doug’s date because homeboy was super nervous.  He managed to utter sentences that were about 90 percent expletives.  The guys were poking fun at Doug and he looked like he was ready to throw Arie off the resort balcony.  Annnnd then Emily walked in.  Perfect timing?

First Date: Doug

Island shopping time!  Doesn’t every guy want to go on a date that involves a perfumery?  Doug and Emily walked around the shops and Emily shared that she wouldn’t want to spend the day with anyone else.

When Doug shared that he founded a charity, Emily swooned.  She asked him if he ever has a bad day, and Doug shared that he was “grouchy” with the other guys when she walked in.  Emily appreciated his honesty and then they wrote a postcard to Doug’s son back home.  After that, they went to the Bermuda “Moon Gate” to make a wish.  Emily’s wish was to not be single forever….Somehow I think that this will come true?

The rest of the day magically passed and suddenly they were at a classic romantic dinner.  Emily said that she was looking for Doug to open up more because his answers always seemed perfect.  She said that it reminded her of how she felt around Brad.  RED FLAG.  So, Emily began her routine interrogation.  What would his ex-girlfriend say was a flaw of his?  Doug’s answer: “I spend too much time with my son.  She probably didn’t like that I didn’t wash her car enough.”  Seriously, Doug??  I bet his ex-girlfriends got a kick out of this.  Can we get a shot of them watching this?  Come on, ABC.

Emily didn’t seem completely satisfied with his answers, but gave him the rose.  What did you think of Doug being seemingly perfect?  I definitely think there is more to him than what he was saying.  Follow your first instincts Emily!  I mean after all, he was talking about himself in third person… That’s never good.

Group Date: Sailing!

The group date doubled as a sailing competition.  The winners would get more time with Emily and the losers would get sent back to the Bermuda resort.  What a rough life.

Of course, there was plenty of smack talk going on.  It was Jef vs. Charlie when it came to “team captain.”  It looked like hard work, and Charlie’s team had a clear lead early on.  Emily was watching from afar and cringing.  Halfway through the competition, Jef’s team caught on and ended up winning.  Charlie’s team (which included a disappointed Sean) was not pleased.  Emily was happy but felt sad too as the losing team took the walk of shame back home.

Ryan continued to seem jerk-ish after the race.  Somebody is not a graceful winner.  On the flip side, Charlie broke down on the drive back and bawled in the car.  Chill dude.  There is still a cocktail party later in the episode!

Based on editing, this was clearly the Ryan Conflict Date.  Arie was not impressed and stole Emily away for the first time.  They had some blanket sharing issues, but it didn’t keep them from making out right away.  Arie certainly takes advantage of his one-on-one time!  They definitely seem to be falling for each other.  Time with Jef followed, and he made a point to open up to Emily.  Emily gets all twitter-pated around him but they ended on an awkward silence.  Should’ve kissed her Jef!

Emily moved on to talk to Ryan.  Emily mentioned dumb things he’s said in the past (how he would expect her to go to the gym if she wanted him to love on her), and he said that was flirtation.  Props to Emily for laughing out loud at this, because I certainly would have.  Actual quote from Ryan: “God designed you to be a beautiful woman, so be a beautiful woman!”  Face palm.  Emily deserves a hard time according to Ryan.  Why?  Who does Ryan think he is?  At this point, he was becoming a Kalon clone.  Emily shared that she felt like Ryan was judging her.

Ryan definitely didn’t get the rose.  Jef did, and was shocked.  He didn’t need to make out with Emily to get her attention…

Two-on-One Date: Nate and John

Bermuda love triangle, indeed.  Also, props to John for using sunscreen!  Nice to see someone practicing good skin care.  But I digress…

It’s really too bad this awesome boat trip was wasted on such an awkward situation.  The boat/cliff diving part of the date wasn’t that entertaining, so ABC cut to the tension-filled rose-giving part of it.

The date was cringe-worthy.  Conversation was strained, and the guys pretty much refused to eat dinner and wanted to instead focus on the date.  Emily declared it one of the worst dates ever, and I don’t blame her.

Alone time with Nate was up first.  He made a point to open up and got teary when he talked about his friends and family.  He elicited many “Awwws” from Emily.  Emily felt that he seemed innocent and sweet.  It didn’t seem like there was much chemistry though.  John was next, and he acknowledged that he wasn’t one to command attention.  Emily liked his confidence and their conversation flowed nicely.  She knew exactly what she was going to do after her time with them.  Long story short, Nate was out and John was in.  Is it just me, or was this two-on-one pretty boring to watch all around?

The Cocktail Party

Ryan came in guns blazing and it was annoying for both the guys and me.  We could only hope that Emily would feel the same.

The party opened with an Alejandro conversation for once!  But it lasted about 30 seconds.  We may never know the real Alejandro.

Ryan was next and he was definitely intimidating Emily.  I’m not a fan.  Arie came in for Rescue Number Two and it was relieving.  Ryan claimed he was at the head of the pack, but I personally feel like he’s clueless and narcissistic.

Emily basically told Arie that he was a frontrunner and that she thinks of him when she’s by herself.  Meanwhile, Ryan continued to shoot himself in the foot based on his interview footage.  He told Michael that he was looking ahead to be The Bachelor if his relationship with Emily didn’t work out.  “If I’m The Bachelor it would be neat for everyone to see.”  Uh.  No.

Emily’s time with Sean was sweet.  Their conversation seemed genuine and she went in for extra kisses before it was over.  Right now it definitely seems like Sean, Arie, Chris, and Jef are frontrunners.  I would put Doug in as well, but Emily was giving off skeptical vibes during their date.  Chris took a risk telling Emily about drama going on in the house.  In past seasons, this has gone horribly for people.  But Emily was on Team Chris and no harm was done.

The spotlight went off of Emily and then it was Chris and Doug having one-on-one time, which never bodes well.  It was pretty humorous that the guys were watching their talk from the windows.  They were more interested in Chris and Doug’s conversation than any conversation that a guy was having with Emily!
