3 Things To Know If You’re A Transfer Student

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Congrats on getting in to Mizzou! You are going to an amazing school and you should get involved in anything and everything you can! But, before you transfer, here are some things you need to know for when you get here, because assuming everything is going to be the exact same as your old school isn’t really the best plan. Here are some expectations you may have about transferring to Mizzou, and what you should really expect.

1. “All of my classes transferred over, so I’ll be able to just pick up academically where I left off in my upper-level courses.”

Maybe, but depending on the program you’re in, you may have to take a bunch of freshman or lower-level courses, and that’s OK! Just remember, you were a freshman too and you all have the same end goal: pass the class and graduate college. You never know, you could meet some really cool people who are freshman or who are even transfer students like you!

2. “I knew my old campus like the back of my hand, but I have no idea where anything is here.”

Mizzou has a huge campus and it can be really easy to get lost if you don’t know where you’re going. Don’t be afraid to ask people for help. It could turn out that the person you ask may even be in your class and you never would have known!

3. “It’s going to be so lonely because I don’t know anyone and I won’t have any friends there.”

It may be a little lonely at first, but the people at Mizzou are some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet! You’re guaranteed to meet one new potential friend by the end of the first week, even if it’s just that kid you talk to during your biology lecture. Also, getting involved really does help you get more comfortable at a new school, so go to the informational meetings for different organizations, or audition for that one group you follow on Twitter.

Being a transfer student can be a little intimidating, but transferring to Mizzou isn’t as painful as you may expect it to be.

During my time with HerCampus, I was a Senior at Mizzou, originally from the Chicagoland area. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with emphases in Journalism, Film Studies, and Art, and I have a certificate in Multicultural Studies. I am now pursuing an MBA at another university. I like movies, sushi, photography, and Chipotle.   deenakahn.com
