10 Netflix & Hulu Comedies to Lift Your Spirits

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Are you in desperate need of a pick-me-up? Here are five Netflix and five Hulu comedy shows to binge that are sure to bring some laughs!

“Grace & Frankie”

The Netflix original “Grace & Frankie” follows the lives of two women after they have both divorced their husbands. However, the reason for the divorces is what makes this show worth watching: their husbands had an affair with each other. When their husbands announce their plans to wed, an unexpected friendship blossoms between Grace and Frankie. With three seasons and a fourth on the way, this show leaves you with plenty of episodes to binge.

“Arrested Development”

Recently made a Netflix original, “Arrested Development” portrays what may be the most dysfunctional family on television. The plot is described in its opening credits before every episode, “the story of a wealthy family who lost everything, and the one son who had no choice but to keep them all together.” Michael Bluth feels like the only sane person in his family; with a failed magician for a brother, a sister with a shopping addiction, and a father who landed himself in jail for stealing money from the family business, who can blame him? For anyone in need of a laugh, this show never disappoints.

“Portlandia”

“Portlandia” is a sketch comedy series centered around the city of Portland, Oregon. The show has a SNL feeling to it but without the live audience and fewer actors. Each sketch stars Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein as they portray various characters in several situations. From playing two women who own a feminist bookstore to a couple who can’t stop binge-watching “Star Trek”, “Portlandia” is one of a kind.

The Office

If you haven’t seen this show yet, it should be next on your must-watch list. “The Office” is one of the most renowned comedy shows in television history, documenting the lives of coworkers in the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Regional manager Michael Scott is the boss everyone wishes they had, always cracking jokes and driving his employees up the wall. With several moments of laughter and some heart-felt scenes, “The Office” is worth the watch.

“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”

Another Netflix original, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is quirky and charming even when dealing with heavy topics. In season one, Kimmy Schmidt adjusts to modern life after being rescued from an apocalyptic cult. When she befriends Titus, a gay wannabe Broadway star, they support each other in whatever struggles they face.

“Rick and Morty”

Source: Hulu

The Adult Swim cartoon “Rick and Morty” is one of the most popular shows to date. The show stars a genius scientist and his grandson has they go on ridiculous inter-dimensional adventures. After missing for nearly 20 years, Rick returns to live with his daughter’s family. Turning the garage into his own makeshift lab, Rick creates various gadgets with Morty as they travel through the universe.

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is one of the main reasons you should have a Hulu account. Revolving around Brooklyn’s 99th Precinct, the immature but talented NYPD detective Jake Peralta never had to work too hard at his job. That is, until his new commanding officer came around. Jake’s laidback attitude clashes often with Captain Raymond Holt’s strict manner, giving this comedy an entertaining charm.

“Billy on the Street”

In this hilarious comedy game show, Billy Eichner runs through the streets of New York asking pedestrians questions about pop culture. If their opinions don’t align with his, or if they get too scared to answer, Billy explodes into an apparent fit of rage. In skits like “For A Dollar”, Billy asks people questions, and if they get it right they win a dollar. With frequent celebrity guests and Billy’s quick wit, “Billy on the Street” is comedy gold.

“30 Rock”

Based loosely on her experiences as head writer for “Saturday Night Live”, Tina Fey portrays Liz Lemon, a woman with the same position for a sketch comedy show “TGS with Tracy Jordan”. She must deal with an arrogant boss, a loose-cannon star and an attention-seeking best friend. Liz attempts to face the struggles of her work life and real life without losing her mind.

“Community”

“Community” follows the experiences of a group of friends as they attend community college. Starring characters played by renowned actors such as Donald Glover and Yvette Nicole Brown, these friends bond over the fact that they attend the worst educational institution. With smart and inventive humor, this comedy continued to provide laughs for six seasons.
