Pros and Cons of Having a Class Crush

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Minnesota chapter.

At least once in college there will be one person in your class that you’ll be attracted to, and it’s honestly the worst. There’s a reason they’re called “crushes,” people! They aren’t all bad though, crushes provide some extra motivation to show up to class and add some excitement to an otherwise boring lecture or lab. Here are some of the pros and cons of having a class crush.

PRO: You already have something in common.

You two might not be majoring in the same subject, or might not even have an interest in the class and are just there to fill those lib. ed. requirements. Still, it’s something to talk about.

CON: It’s hard to form a relationship by discussing term papers.

My first instinct is to always talk about class, but sadly, I’ve learned that can only get you so far.

PRO: You get a little rush whenever they walk through the door.

It makes your day 87 percent better when you get to see them, even if it’s the back of their head in a crowded lecture hall.

CON: Your heart sinks whenever they don’t show up.

And if you’re anything like me, you assume the worst has happened (even though they probably just slept in, because no one enjoys 9:00 a.m. lectures).

PRO: Group projects provide the perfect opportunity to get to know them.

Actually, this can go either way. Some people really show their true colors working in groups. You want to make sure your crush is a team player.

CON: You’re in a 200+ person lecture with no discussion sections.

Sometimes all your class crush is is “the person who sits at the end of row five,” but that doesn’t make your feelings any less real.

PRO: Built in study buddy (who you’re also super into).

It’s really easy to turn those study dates into coffee dates, and then, look at that! Now you have an excuse to take them out.

CON: Trying to fit in small talk before class starts is the worst.

Small talk in general is pretty much the worst thing ever, but it’s even worse when being pressed for time while the professor’s loading their PowerPoint.

PRO: You feel really good about yourself whenever you say something super smart in class.

Getting the opportunity to show off the fact that you are intelligent and amazing should never go unappreciated.

CON: It’s class!

Paying attention to a difficult lecture can be hard enough, and it’s especially hard when you have a crush distracting you. It’s even worse in language classes, no one sounds smooth speaking in a language they don’t know.

Having a crush can be difficult, especially if your feelings aren’t reciprocated. Even if you two don’t end up in the relationship you’ve been imagining, at least you’ll make a new friend, or who knows? You might be telling people that you two met in biology at your wedding.
