6 Times Taylor Swift Tried to be Edgy in her New Album

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Minnesota chapter.

If you haven’t noticed, Taylor Swift just released her new album reputation. People are going bananas over her new, edgier sound. Not only is her style of music different, but some of the lyrics definitely aren’t rated PG. Check out the most dramatic things she did below!

When she featured Future.

Did we ever think that the same girl that wrote “Our Song” would have one of the most popular rappers featured on a track? I think this should officially mark the end of Taylor’s appearances at any country music award show.

All the alcohol references…

I know Taylor has been over the legal drinking age for years, but she has never referenced alcohol as much as she does in this album. Nine out of the fifteen songs reference drinking or drugs in some way, from beer to whiskey to wine, here are some of the stand-outs:

“Drinking on a beach with you all over me” – End Game

You should take it as a compliment that I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk.” – Gorgeous

“I knew it from the first Old Fashioned, we were cursed” – Getaway Car

“Drinking beer out of plastic cups” – King of my Heart

SEX!

Again, I am very aware that Taylor is a grown woman and she is free to do whatever she wants in relationships, but she has never sang lyrics that so explicitly hint at what she does behind closed doors.

“Bought this dress just so you could take it off” from the song “Dress,” (okay actually all of this song is pretty steamy).

“In the middle of the night, in my dreams you should see the things we do” …from “Ready for It.”

“Do the girls back home touch you like I do?” from “Delicate.”

“You know I’m not a bad girl, but I do bad things with you” from “So It Goes.”

“You had turned my bed into a sacred oasis” from “Dancing with Our Hands Tied.”

When she painted herself as the villain.

The change in Taylor’s persona from victim to villain is perhaps that biggest change from her past music. In her video for “Look What You Made Me Do,” Swift shows her awareness about all the things people say about her and her persona, one line being “There she goes, playing the victim again.” Not on this album, Taylor is taking back her power. “Getaway Car,” “I Did Something Bad,” and “This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things” are her most revealing tracks.

And so I took an axe to a mended fence

Did you think I wouldn’t hear all the things you said about me?

‘Cause forgiveness is a nice thing to do. Haha, I can’t even say it with a straight face” – All lyrics from “This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.”

Whenever she talked about her “reputation.”

It’s the title of the album for a reason! Taylor continues to show her awareness of her persona in the public eye and both celebrates and shows some insecurities about her fame.

“Big reputation, big reputation, you and me, we got big reputations” – End Game

“My reputation’s never been worse, so you must like me for me…” – Delicate

“You know I’m not a bad girl, but I do bad things with you” – So It Goes…

All the liars are calling me one” – Call it What You Want

When she swore.

Okay, I know Taylor is a twenty-seven-year-old who probably says “shit” every day but I was still shook listening to I Did Something Bad for the first time.

Even with the dramatic and edgier style Taylor shows off her lyrical talents by drawing from her own experiences. What song from reputation is your favorite?
