Perfect Autumn Outfit

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

It’s that time of year again girls! It’s the time when scarves, boots, and skinny jeans start coming out of your closet, wanting to be worn. The leaves are changing into their true colors of red, orange, and yellow. School is in full swing and the days are getting shorter. Now that it’s October, the weather is going to start to become steadily cooler.

However, since we live in Pennsylvania, you all know how bi-polar our weather can be. One day it could be a high of 80 degrees and the next we could have a snowstorm (remember “Snowtober” from last year? Yeah, I do too.) Let me give you a piece of advice: don’t let the weather fool you! I’ve walked around campus plenty of times already wearing the wrong clothes. Story time!

One day in September, I wore a tank top with skinny jeans and flip flops. I was so cold that I had goose bumps on my arms and my fingers were going numb (yeah it wasn’t freezing cold but when I get cold, the blood circulation in my body really sucks.) About a week later I went out in a long sleeve shirt, sweatpants, and boots that went halfway up my leg only to discover the high for the day was in upper 70s. I was dying of heat.

You see the problem? It’s hard trying to figure out what to wear because of the constantly changing weather of autumn. And then I discovered a solution. I came across this outfit while scrolling through Pinterest*.

I saw this outfit and I was like “Brainmatch! This would be the perfect topic for my first blog!” I adore this outfit down to the very last detail. Purple is one of my favorite colors so it automatically caught my eye. Also, there is a little bit of color clashing going on, but it’s a good thing. Purple and yellow are opposites (they are complementary colors, thank you interior design!) When done right, it really makes a statement.

This gold tote adds a pop of color to the outfit. And never forget to accessorize! But don’t over-do it, or else it will look like you’re trying too hard. Anyway, I’ll break down every piece for you, that way you can replicate it in the easiest way possible!

Cardigan: For starters, it’s a great way to keep you warm on those chilly mornings. Blazer, jacket, cardigan, whatever you have will do! If it gets too warm, you can easily take it right off. Just remember to wear a tank top underneath!

Tank Top: A basic must have. I always keep around at least five tank tops in my closet. You never know when they will come in handy. I think white is a major must have because it goes easily with everything. But definitely have an array of neutral colored tank tops in your wardrobe, that way they can be mixed and matched with anything.

Jeans/Leggings: I’m a jeans type of girl, but if you’re not, leggings or yoga pants can work with this outfit too. Most jean washes will work with this outfit. I’d recommend dark blue, black, or grey. Patterned jeans with this outfit would we way too over-powering.

Scarf: Scarves are definitely a way to make a statement. Whether it is a warm knit scarf or a scarf made of lighter material, scarves can instantly add fun to an outfit that looks like it needs something. This particular outfit includes an infinity scarf; it’s been my new favorite type of scarf lately. With this scarf I particularly like the different colors knitted into it, especially the green. You could pull out the dark green color and use it in your make-up!

Boots: I’m a boot lover. Anytime I can wear boots, I wear them. These boots work well with the outfit. It picks up some of the brown included in the scarf and the boots go about half-way up your calf. It’s a great way to show off those legs! An added plus: the little buckle on the outside of the boots.

Purse: Instead of those traditional backpacks, go with something more stylish! A tote like this is perfect to walk around campus with. It’s a great size for carrying around your binders, books, and folders. Specifically with this outfit, the clashing colors of purple and yellow make a fun statement!

Earrings: These earrings go well with this outfit. They are not too attention drawing, because most of the attention is on the scarf. Too much attention around one area of your body will cause your look to be out of balance! Remember how I said that the scarf is the statement of the outfit? Well, you can consider the earrings to be the accent.

Bracelet: This bracelet is oh-so-cute! Once again, it’s an accent because the scarf is the part of the outfit that takes center stage. Another reason why I like this bracelet is because it includes all the colors in the outfit.

Bring it on crazy bi-polar weather. Now you try!
